Ready, steady, move!

We have been developing a range of skills in the gym hall, using different equipment and thinking about how to move creatively.

We have really enjoyed recent sessions with visiting gymnastics specialists.

I DID THE HOP AND MY LEGS STAYED UP!

I CAN BALANCE ON THE TRICKY BIT.

THE RIBBONS MOVED BECAUSE I CHANGED THE WAY MY ARM WENT.

I TRIED TO ROLL OVER.

THE TRAMPOLINE IS GOOD FUN. I DID A BIG JUMP.

NEXT TIME I WANT TO GO FASTER ON THE STEPPING STONES.

Fantastic fingers!

We take part in lots of experiences to develop our fine motor skills, strength, dexterity and real-life skills. We show great perseverance and attention to detail!

Why not ask us to join in with some of these activities at home? Playing with small bricks, manipulating modelling dough, picking up shells on the beach or fastening buttons are all ways to help us develop these skills too.

The Little Garden and Secret Garden

We continue to enjoy daily opportunities for energetic outdoor play.

I LIKE CLIMBING OVER. I COULDN’T DO IT BEFORE BUT I CAN NOW.

THE GARDEN IS BETTER BECAUSE I CAN GO ON THE BIKES.

WE RAN A RACE AND I WAS SECOND.

As well as physical play we have also recently:

  • started to plan what we’d like to grow in our new, HUGE planters
  • planted some seeds
  • made stories and told them to our friends from the stage we built together
  • made decisions about new resources
  • looked after the natural environment by litter-picking and sweeping up

Hello! Who’s speaking?

Lots of us have been interested in mobile phones recently and we’ve created our own using magnets or card.

To build on this interest in communication we’ve been exploring a range of digital technologies that are a bit like phones. We have been using our talking and listening skills to take turns and ask some questions too.

Festivals and celebrations

We have used Burns Day and Chinese New Year as recent contexts for learning.

We have:

  • tasted and described some new foods
  • compared traditions to how we celebrate things in our families
  • played with words and sounds in Scots language
  • developed mark-making skills
  • explored form, colour and line in art
  • worked together to follow a recipe
  • shared the food we have prepared with our friends

THIS IS TARTAN. IT’S SCOTTISH.

LUGS ARE EARS!

HOOSE AND GAIRDEN ARE LIKE HOUSE AND GARDEN.

THIS IS THE FLAG OF SCOTLAND. I KNOW SOME OTHER FLAGS TOO.

THE SHORTBREAD SMELLS GOOD!

I TRIED THE HAGGIS. I HAVEN’T HAD IT BEFORE. IT HAD A FUNNY SMELL.

Outdoor play

Even in the colder weather we enjoy opportunities to play and learn outdoors.

We have been:

  • creating and acting out stories in the Secret Garden
  • developing the Little Garden
  • exploring the local area and thinking about journeys we make
  • exploring how water changes state

I WANT TO MOVE THE BRIDGE OVER THERE.

LET’S MAKE A GATE WITH THESE!

THEY’RE USING TOOLS TO BUILD THE CUPBOARDS.

WE MADE STORIES IN A BOOK.

CAN WE SEE MY HOUSE IF WE GO FOR A WALK?

THAT SAYS THE NAME OF THE STREET.

THE SNOW AND ICE COMES WHEN IT GETS VERY COLD… IT MELTS AND GOES AWAY.

Festive fun

In December we learned about the story of Christmas and what Christians believe. We talked about Christmas and other celebrations in our families too. We found that some things were the same and some were different.

“We eat special food – cake!”

“I get new clothes.”

“I go to see my family.”

“My cousins come and we play.”

“I like all the presents!”

Building on the children’s knowledge and interests we developed:

  • literacy skills by following instructions to make Christmas pudding and decorations
  • fine motor skills by wrapping presents and creating decorations
  • numeracy and maths skills by collecting and organising items in the playroom and outside
  • confidence and an enjoyment of performing together in our Christmas show

amongst other things.

It was a busy end to the year! Thank you for all your warm wishes and support 🙂
