Exploring the natural world

We have the opportunity to play outdoors every day and enjoy exploring the natural environment in all weathers. This outdoor play and discussion supports our learning and development in so many areas – gross motor skills, science, imagination, curiosity, numeracy and maths, vocabulary enrichment, problem solving, sense of well-being…

Did you know you could make paint from berries? Or that lifting a fallen frozen leaf might leave a matching shape on the ground, just like a jigsaw?

Session 2019-20 Welcome back! :)

The whole nursery team would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our new families as well as those children and families who have returned after the holidays.

This blog will be updated in collaboration with the children to share some of the many indoor and outdoor experiences they enjoy in nursery. The aim of the blog is to show the skills and friendships your children are developing.

Further to that you may find useful links and information about wider wellbeing and early learning and development.

Happy holidays!

The whole nursery team would like to thank you for your continued support this session and for all your kind words and generous gifts.

We wish you a lovely holiday together, full of sunshine and smiles, and look forward to welcoming you back on Monday 19th August.

Building healthy habits

We enjoy preparing snack, setting the table for lunch and tasting new things.

We are independent and responsible as we help ourselves and tidy up afterwards too. Ask us to do this at home!

We can talk about healthy foods and why it’s good to eat with friends.

I CUTTED IT WITH MY FINGERS IN A SAFE PLACE.

I PUT THE SKINS HERE AND THE PLATES ON THE SHELF. WE HAVE TO CLEAN THE TABLES LATER.

I WASHED MY HANDS BUT THEY STILL MIGHT BE DIRTY SO IM PICKING UP THE FRUIT WITH THESE (TONGS).

I LIKE IT BECAUSE IT’S QUIET AT SNACK TIME AND I CAN EAT GOOD THINGS.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES ARE DIFFERENT COLOURS AND ARE ALL HEALTHY.

What can you do with ten black dots?

Lots of us came up with creative ways to answer this question!

We have collated many of our ideas in a big number book.

We’ve shown an understanding of counting and number recognition as well as identifying how many items are in a group without having to count each one.

Real-life literacy

Look at some recent examples of our fantastic literacy skills!

These ideas were all our own!

Get growing!

Now that we have lots of fantastic new planters and have spotted signs of spring, we’ve been discussing things that grow.

We have:

  • compared different types of seeds
  • planted some grass seed heads
  • had a look at seeds as they sprout
  • made plans for what we would like to grow
  • shared ideas about what plants need to grow well

We would gratefully receive any plants/seeds/bulbs/cuttings that you would like to share with us to help our Little Garden flourish. We’d love for you to come and plant things with us too!

I WANT TO GROW STRAWBERRIES…AND RASPBERRIES TOO!

I LIKE BLACKBERRIES. MY GRAN HAS A BLACKBERRY BUSH.

CAN WE HAVE LOTS OF FLOWERS? RED ONES AND YELLOW ONES?

THEY NEED WATER AND SUN TO GROW.

THE VEGETABLES COME OUT OF THE GROUND.

I LIKE LAVENDER. IT SMELLS NICE.
