{"id":1352,"date":"2011-12-12T14:35:14","date_gmt":"2011-12-12T13:35:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/er\/Barrhead\/?p=1352"},"modified":"2011-12-12T14:35:14","modified_gmt":"2011-12-12T13:35:14","slug":"s5-mini-trials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/er\/Barrhead\/2011\/12\/12\/s5-mini-trials\/","title":{"rendered":"S5 Mini Trials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday 28<sup>th<\/sup> November, ten pupils from S5 were selected to represent Barrhead High School in the East Renfrewshire \u2018Mini Trials\u2019 \u2013 an initiative created by Sandy Wylie QC &amp; taken forward with the support and encouragement of the Faculty of Advocates.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;MiniTrials&#8217; are simulated court cases\u00a0where young people take part in\u00a0 reconstructions of\u00a0both criminal &amp; civil jury trials. They convene the court, hear the evidence and return their own verdict &#8211; with the help of lawyer volunteers.\u00a0\u00a0 The\u00a0 materials have been prepared by Scottish lawyers &#8211; and are based on what actually happens in a Scottish Sheriff Court. They are designed to help students learn about the Scottish legal system, courts and the people who appear in them in an interesting and enjoyable way.\u00a0 In essence, the\u00a0ultimate aim is to improve\u00a0both understanding and discussion about our legal system.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the day, pupils took part in recreations of both Criminal &amp; Civil\u00a0jury trials \u2013 competing against Mearns Castle HS &amp; St Ninian\u2019s HS respectively. After a narrow defeat to Mearns Castle in the morning, the team were able to win their Civil case against St Ninian\u2019s in the afternoon &#8211; successfully acting on behalf of the Defender in the world famous civil case of <em>Donoghue v Stevenson 1932 S.C.
