S1 trip to see ‘A Christmas Carol’
All of S1 went to see ‘A Christmas Carol’ at the Citizens’ Theatre last week. It was a fabulous production and was hugely enjoyed by all.
In English pupils then made postcards, a selection of which were sent to the theatre to show our appreciation.
Here are some of their comments:
‘I enjoyed Christmas Day when Scrooge was really nice to everyone. I also liked how he went to his nephew’s house for Christmas.’
‘My favourite part was when Scrooge was flying on his bed and the moon was moving side to side in the sky.’
‘I enjoyed how close we were to the play. In a normal theatre it’s hard to hear and see.’
Calling All Bloggers
There is an opportunity for anyone aged 14-17 to become a blogger for the Children and Young People’s Commissioner. You need to have access to the internet, and be willing to blog about issues that interest young people for at least 3 months. There are shopping vouchers for those who are successful and complete the three months. If you are interested, go to English room 35 on Monday 5/12/16 at 12.30pm.
Rights Respecting English Department
Well done to our S4 pupils who have been coming into S1 English classes to teach them about young people’s rights, and to explore what this means around the world.
Public Speaking
On Wednesday 9th November, two teams from Barrhead High School competed in the Rotary Youth Speaks competition at St. Ninian’s High School – an annual event that sees pupils from across East Renfrewshire putting their public speaking skills to the test. Our first team in the senior category impressed the judging panel by exploring whether age really does equal wisdom. Taking a close look at ‘being female in today’s society’, was our second senior team’s topic. Although both teams performed exceptionally well, we were sadly pipped to the post by Mearns Castle High School who convinced the audience that physically disciplining children should be stopped. The judges commented that it was an incredibly close race and praised both Barrhead High School teams for their thoughtful, powerful speeches, and confident delivery. Ken Macintosh, Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, was also in attendance, and praised all speakers for their dedication and enthusiasm, commenting that it had given him great hope in the future of politics. A huge congratulations to both senior teams – the night was a great success and a real credit to the pupils’ diligent efforts!
WiFi up and running!
The English department are leading the way with the use of the new Wifi and portable ICT system in Mrs Richardson’s class.
Creative Writing Competition
Calling all S1, 2 and 3 creative writers. ‘Footprints’ competition is open now- all entries must be in by Friday 18/11/16. If you’d like inspiration, Miss Kirkpatrick’s lunchtime writing workshop runs on Tuesday lunchtimes.
Supported Study S4
National 5 Supported Study will begin tomorrow- Tuesday 8/11/16 in room 33 for 1 hour. All welcome.
Rotary Club Youth Speaks Competition
Well done to S3 students Ailidh Hamilton, Brogan Meechan and Peter Douglas-Kellie who took part in the annual Rotary Club Youth Speaks competition last week, hosted this year by Mearns Castle High School.
The team delivered an excellent presentation on ‘The Commercialisation of Christmas’ and were runners up in the senior category. Ailidh was the team’s main speaker, while Brogan chaired the presentation and Peter delivered Barrhead High School’s vote of thanks.
Well done to all of them!
