Clyde in the Classroom Launch

lecture-1

We attended the launch of Clyde in the Classroom on Friday 13 January! It was very exciting and really great fun! We learned about the River Clyde and its many tributaries. We also learned about some of the fish found in the Clyde and a little about the brown trout.

Later we were shown what to expect when our hatchery arrived and how it would look when it was set up. Our excitement was really building!

Later, we got a chance to explore the Science Centre and try out a few of the exhibits.

All in all, a great day!

Nutrition

In class we have been learning about how to eat more healthily with Mrs Kaur. We used a child-friendly website to research different nutritional needs. The food pyramid was a great guide to how much of each food group we should eat.

The food groups include: fruit and vegetables, carbohydrates, e.g. pasta, bread and rice, protein, e.g. chicken, beef, and fish, dairy and fats and sugars.

Below is a link to an advert written by Kristie, Stacey, Lucy and William to promote healthy lunches for younger pupils.

Literacy – Learning Statements

In Literacy, in class, we have been learning how to write Learning Statements. We have learned to reflect on our learning, stating what we have done well and how we accomplished this.

We have five questions to answer which help us write our statement. the questions are:

What have I learned?

How have I learned this?

How is this useful?

What skills have I learned?

What attributes have I displayed?

We each add our statements to our e-portfolios and this helps us build up a record of our learning. Other teachers, future teachers and employers will be able to read these and see how well we work.

Archery After School Club

The boys and girls in Primary 5 were offered the chance to try out archery at an after school club run by Miss Macdonald and Mrs McCulloch. The children learned about all the parts of the bows and arrows, and, more importantly, the safety equipment and rules to take part.

Below, you can see Courtney, Carys, Skye and Lauren H sharpening their skills.

All of the children said how much they enjoyed this sport. It was fun to learn all about the parts of the bows and arrows, how to load the bows, and how to stand

The Water Cycle

kristieryan-j

This term, in science, we have been learning about the water cycle. We were surprised to learn that the water we drink has been around for millions of years!

This is all because water is a closed cycle. It never stops! Water in rivers, pods, lakes, streams and even puddles is heated up by the sum. As it heats up, it becomes water vapour, which rises into the atmosphere. This is called evaporation.

In the air, the water vapour cools down, turns back into water and begins to form clouds. This is called condensation.

When the clouds become too dense, the water then falls back to Earth as rain, hail or snow. This is called precipitation.

When it lands on Earth, it can land in streams, ponds, lakes, puddles and the ground. From there it runs back to the seas. This is called collection.

The cycle is continuous: it never stops.

Hannah, Thomas L, Kristie, Ben M, Ryan J and Grace have drawn annotated diagrams to explain the water cycle and show their understanding.

Numeracy

We have been working hard this term to improve our skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by completing a 50-a-day task. This means that we have ten minutes to accurately complete fifty calculations each day. We correct each other’s work and calculate a percentage score. If we achieve 100% three weeks in a row in any of the disciplines, we move up to the next level of difficulty.

Already there are many people who have moved up! In addition, Ben G has reached level 2. In subtraction, Skye and Dylan are on level 2. In multiplication, Skye, Carys, James, Madison, Lauren H, Hannah, Lianna, Lauren McE, Caitlin, William, Ben M, Sameera and Grace are on level 2. In division, Carys, Hannah, Caitlin, William, Ben M and Grace have reached level 2.

We celebrate others success and achievements and learn to be determined to do our best.

The Daily Mile

Every class in school is taking part in the Daily Mile Challenge. daily-mile-james daily-mile-david

Every day, we try to complete a mile by running, jogging , walking or a mixture of all three.

Everyone is allowed to go at their own pace to complete the challenge – not everyone can run for ten or fifteen minutes! It is a bout developing our fitness and stamina.

Art – Drawing Mandalas

Inben-m Art, we have been learning how to draw mandalas. A mandala is a circular pattern  learn which grows from a central point. The word mandala comes from the old Indian language of Sanskrit. Loosely translated it means ‘circle’. It is pronounced ‘mandle’.

Tocourtney learn how to draw mandalas, we watched several on-line tutorial videos. These gave us some great ideas. After that we had one or two practice attempts. With each one, we improved our skills.

Here, you can see several of the mandalas from our class. We have examples from Ben M, Courtney, Dylan, Grace, Katie, Lianna and Madison.
