Safety in the Park

‎Primary Seven went on a school trip to Arthurlie Park for an educational event called Safety in the Park.
Safety in the Park is an event to teach young children about drugs, road safety, law and your health and wellbeing. It included activities which warned you about electricity, fire safety and cyber safety.
The children were split into groups of five to six people and each group attended certain activities at various times.
At one of the main activities which taught children a lesson about ‘stranger danger’, many people followed. One member of staff dressed as a ‘stranger’, advised that children should follow her. Little did some children know, there was a policeman observing the whole scenario, and then explained to the children why they should not have followed the woman.
The stations were all there to help us to make sensible and safe choices

1 Drink Station: David  “this station taught me how horrible and dizzy you could end up feeling if you drink alcohol”. Here we got to try out ‘Beer Goggle’ to see how alcohol can affect your vision.
2 Stranger Danger: Katie  “I felt embarrassed that I followed the lady who didn’t have any identification. It was very easy to be convinced by somebody who we shouldn’t have been trusting”.
3 Rethink your drink : We discussed good drinks and bad drinks for people and how some drinks are a little deceitful with their advertising. Thomas “I was surprised by how much sugar was in Diet Coke and Coca Cola Life”
5 Community Safety: Here we discussed dog fouling, graffiti and the penalties these can bring about. Ben “It surprised me that you could get fined up to £500 for dog fouling!”
6 Road Safety : Stacey “it is often presumed that it is the driver’s fault in a bike accident, but quite often it might be the cyclist’s fault”.
7 Cyber Safety: At this station, we learned about how easy it is for information to be revealed online, without you realising you are doing it. Online activity can be very dangerous and this station raised the awareness of many of us. William “even the smallest detail can reveal so much about your life that you don’t realise”

After our day at Safety in the Park, as a class we feel that we will all try and make sensible and safe decisions.
Remember to never feel pressured to try these things. Be smart and be responsible!

Our First VR Experience

Yesterday we tried our school’s new VR (virtual reality) headsets. We journeyed to China and Space. We even looked at volcanoes erupting!

Lianna: “It felt like we were actually there watching it.”

Sameera: “It felt amazing to see stuff that we wouldn’t normally see up that close.”

Lauren: “It was weird because there were people in the pictures and it felt like you were standing next to them.”

Ben M: “It felt really weird because we were travelling to different places in the world and beyond. But really we were still sitting in the classroom.”

Our learning so far..

This morning the children of p6, Mrs Macrae and I reflected on our first term back at school. Together, we brainstormed memories, discussed our likes and dislikes and we even thought about our hopes for term 2. It was great to think back and look at just how much we have achieved in such a small period of time.
Following our reflection time, we shared our memories aloud with our classmates and Mrs Macrae created a word bank of tricky words on the board. Soon after that we transferred our memories into a planner for writing. We finished today’s literacy period by writing about our experiences and using lots of detail to engage our reader. The children worked very hard to use their best VCOP (vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation) and to write in paragraphs. I was thrilled to see so many children challenging themselves to use ambitious vocabulary, I even saw some of the class using a thesaurus to look for synonyms (WOW!).
Reflecting on our first 7 weeks together was fantastic and I now can’t wait to read these fantastic pieces of writing! Here’s to more of the same in term 2.

Well done Primary 6!

BYOD – Bring your own device to school

Today P6 brought in their own electronic devices to take part in digital learning.

Scott: Miss Macdonald helped me access the Wi-Fi.

Lauren: We used our own devices to access the internet and log into Yammer.

Ryan: Yammer is really fun. It's like safe Facebook for children.

Lianna: We were making quiz's and polls for each other.

William: We have been online using SumDog and I like the questions.

Lauren: We used the devices to play a Mary Queen of Scots game.

We all really liked our first BYOD day of P6 and we can’t wait to do it again.

Primary 6 Our First Day

We had a great first day with our new teacher, Miss McGarrity.

We made birthday cards for each other, we created bunting and made our own individual handprints.

Miss McGarrity made lots of jokes and made a video all about our journey to success in Primary 6. It is to be continued…..hopefully by us.

Lauren McEwan enjoyed “making the birthday cards so now every pupil has their own card ready for when their birthday arrives!”

Ryan Jenks loved “drawing around his hand and creating his own design.”

Katie Flemington loved “watching Miss McGarrity’s movie and is looking forward to creating more clips throughout the year.”

Lauren Hill liked” working in groups to decide what a good teacher would do.”

We are looking forward to tomorrow 🙂

Summer Holidays!

Oh my goodness! Can you believe that we are at the end of Primary 5 already? Only two more days to go until we are off on holiday.

One of the highlights of our year was participating in Clyde in The Classroom. Looking after the trout fry was a great responsibility but also good fun.  We would recommend doing Clyde in the Classroom if you get the chance! Learning Mandarin with Chen Ni was also very good. We can’t wait to meet the new Mandarin teacher and develop our skills.                                                                                                                         Many of us are pleased with the improvements we have made in areas such as Maths, Reading, Writing, and Gymnastics.

Next session, we are looking forward to working with Miss McGarrity and Mrs McGurren in Primary 6. We hope to improve our skills in Art, Maths, P.E., Writing, Reading and many other things.

We will miss Mrs McCulloch and her fabulous multi-coloured hair! (It was fun waiting to see if it had changed colour over a weekend!) And how we always have to remind her to send down the register when she forgets. We always tell her off by saying,                            “M-r-s  Mc-C-u-l-l-o-c-h!!!”

We will also miss our friends Lucy and Matthew who are going to different schools in Primary 6. Good luck!

We hope everyone has a fabulous holiday, and see you in August
