To celebrate Chinese New Year we cooked vegetarian spring rolls. Working together, we sliced and chopped cabbage, ginger, carrot and spring onions and a generous pinch of spices! Carefully, we spooned the ingredients onto the pastry and wrapped them up before placing in the ovens to cook. Very tasty!

Ocean Acidification
We have been exploring global issues using critical thinking approaches. We explored the problem of ocean acidification using the critical thinking tree.
We identified the roots of the problem, the impact it has on the environment and for us all. We then explored different solutions and actions we could take as global citizen.
We then created concept cartoons to display our learning.
I used ICT to create my concept cartoon. My solution was to work together to stop polluting the environment. Scott
Safety in the Park
Primary Seven went on a school trip to Arthurlie Park for an educational event called Safety in the Park.
Safety in the Park is an event to teach young children about drugs, road safety, law and your health and wellbeing. It included activities which warned you about electricity, fire safety and cyber safety.
The children were split into groups of five to six people and each group attended certain activities at various times.
At one of the main activities which taught children a lesson about ‘stranger danger’, many people followed. One member of staff dressed as a ‘stranger’, advised that children should follow her. Little did some children know, there was a policeman observing the whole scenario, and then explained to the children why they should not have followed the woman.
The stations were all there to help us to make sensible and safe choices
1 Drink Station: David “this station taught me how horrible and dizzy you could end up feeling if you drink alcohol”. Here we got to try out ‘Beer Goggle’ to see how alcohol can affect your vision.
2 Stranger Danger: Katie “I felt embarrassed that I followed the lady who didn’t have any identification. It was very easy to be convinced by somebody who we shouldn’t have been trusting”.
3 Rethink your drink : We discussed good drinks and bad drinks for people and how some drinks are a little deceitful with their advertising. Thomas “I was surprised by how much sugar was in Diet Coke and Coca Cola Life”
5 Community Safety: Here we discussed dog fouling, graffiti and the penalties these can bring about. Ben “It surprised me that you could get fined up to £500 for dog fouling!”
6 Road Safety : Stacey “it is often presumed that it is the driver’s fault in a bike accident, but quite often it might be the cyclist’s fault”.
7 Cyber Safety: At this station, we learned about how easy it is for information to be revealed online, without you realising you are doing it. Online activity can be very dangerous and this station raised the awareness of many of us. William “even the smallest detail can reveal so much about your life that you don’t realise”
After our day at Safety in the Park, as a class we feel that we will all try and make sensible and safe decisions.
Remember to never feel pressured to try these things. Be smart and be responsible!
Summer Holidays!
Oh my goodness! Can you believe that we are at the end of Primary 5 already? Only two more days to go until we are off on holiday.
One of the highlights of our year was participating in Clyde in The Classroom. Looking after the trout fry was a great responsibility but also good fun. We would recommend doing Clyde in the Classroom if you get the chance! Learning Mandarin with Chen Ni was also very good. We can’t wait to meet the new Mandarin teacher and develop our skills. Many of us are pleased with the improvements we have made in areas such as Maths, Reading, Writing, and Gymnastics.
Next session, we are looking forward to working with Miss McGarrity and Mrs McGurren in Primary 6. We hope to improve our skills in Art, Maths, P.E., Writing, Reading and many other things.
We will miss Mrs McCulloch and her fabulous multi-coloured hair! (It was fun waiting to see if it had changed colour over a weekend!) And how we always have to remind her to send down the register when she forgets. We always tell her off by saying, “M-r-s Mc-C-u-l-l-o-c-h!!!”
We will also miss our friends Lucy and Matthew who are going to different schools in Primary 6. Good luck!
We hope everyone has a fabulous holiday, and see you in August
National Outdoor Education Day
Today, Thursday 18 May, is National Outdoor Education Day. Every class in our school took part in this event.
We decided to take our literacy circles outside and enjoy reading the next chapter of Roald Dahl’s Boy, in the sun.
We were so glad it was warm and sunny. Sitting in the adventure trail, at the picnic benches or on the grass was very relaxing and much more fun than being inside in a stuffy, hot classroom.
Nutrition
In class we have been learning about how to eat more healthily with Mrs Kaur. We used a child-friendly website to research different nutritional needs. The food pyramid was a great guide to how much of each food group we should eat.
The food groups include: fruit and vegetables, carbohydrates, e.g. pasta, bread and rice, protein, e.g. chicken, beef, and fish, dairy and fats and sugars.
Below is a link to an advert written by Kristie, Stacey, Lucy and William to promote healthy lunches for younger pupils.

Literacy – Agreeing Success Criteria
Archery After School Club
The boys and girls in Primary 5 were offered the chance to try out archery at an after school club run by Miss Macdonald and Mrs McCulloch. The children learned about all the parts of the bows and arrows, and, more importantly, the safety equipment and rules to take part.
Below, you can see Courtney, Carys, Skye and Lauren H sharpening their skills.
All of the children said how much they enjoyed this sport. It was fun to learn all about the parts of the bows and arrows, how to load the bows, and how to stand
The Daily Mile
Every class in school is taking part in the Daily Mile Challenge.
Every day, we try to complete a mile by running, jogging , walking or a mixture of all three.
Everyone is allowed to go at their own pace to complete the challenge – not everyone can run for ten or fifteen minutes! It is a bout developing our fitness and stamina.
In our photos, you can see James, David, Lucy, Thomas S, Stacey, Scott, Lianna and Sameera taking part.
Art – Drawing Mandalas
In Art, we have been learning how to draw mandalas. A mandala is a circular pattern learn which grows from a central point. The word mandala comes from the old Indian language of Sanskrit. Loosely translated it means ‘circle’. It is pronounced ‘mandle’.
To learn how to draw mandalas, we watched several on-line tutorial videos. These gave us some great ideas. After that we had one or two practice attempts. With each one, we improved our skills.
Here, you can see several of the mandalas from our class. We have examples from Ben M, Courtney, Dylan, Grace, Katie, Lianna and Madison.
