Baking Moon Rock Cakes

Some of the children have been involved in a topic relating to space have been learning about space. One of the stories the children chose relating to space was ‘whatever next.’ This is about a bear who has a picnic on the moon and he travels there on a makeshift rocket. We decided to make our own space picnic with moon rock cakes. So we discussed the different ingredients and the children thought that ‘flour, salt, pepper, eggs and butter’ would be the best things to put into the cakes. Once we measured the ingredients we mixed it all together and made rock shapes before cooking them. We also experimented with one of the eggs to see how strong it was by squeezing it as hard as we could at the top and bottom but nobody was able to crack the egg. By being involved throughout, the children were learning about the process to baking.
