Fine Motor Skills- Scissors

Scissor are a great tool for developing fine motor skills, using them:

  • Develops the skills needed for handwriting – using the thumb, index and middle finger separately from the hand​
  • Helps strengthen the hand muscles​

There are a range of different child friendly scissors available however avoid using ones with just plastic cutting parts as they can be very frustrating to use!

 

Activities

Cut an old cereal box into jigsaw shapes

Draw patterns on paper and cut them out

Use a toilet roll or kitchen roll tube to create a puppet

Make a sun or lion by cutting fringing around a yellow circle

Fold a paper plate or circle of paper in half , cut out a face and add fringing to make a hedgehog

Cut out 2D shapes and make a house

Go through a pile of magazines and cut out pictures then use them to create a new piece of art

Cut out pieces of paper and stick them over an outline of your name

 

Challenge!

Create a scissor skills box with different types of material to cut you could include – tin foil, straws, card, paper, yarn, leaves
