Maths Week

Dome Building

This week we have been building domes using straws and tape. We had to follow picture instructions and pay attention to detail. 1 group managed to complete their dome, while the others are almost finished. We spoke about the importance of triangles in building strong structures.

Job advertising

We have been doing lots of maths due to maths week. We have been looking at jobs relating to maths, and researched our job of choice. We then made a job advertisement and began creating a poster with information on our chosen jobs!

Visit from Morgan Stanley

We have had a special visit from John and Carla who work for Morgan Stanley. There were talking to us about cyber security. By showing us how to recover a file if even if you deleted it and how hackers hack files. There are coming back on Monday the 4th of October to teach us in robotics and we are looking forward to it.

Ian Stewart

As it is maths week we have been given mathematician, Ian Stewart to research. We have learned about the golden angle( 137.5 Degrees) and where we find it in nature. We watched a video of Ian Stewart about the golden angle and found out that the seeds grow one after the other at an angle of 137.5 degrees. We also learnt about Fibonacci spirals and attempted to draw them.

Each week, the teacher chooses 1 or 2 pupils to become writer(s) of the week. This is given to the person or people who creates the most fantastic piece of writing. Our writers of the week last week were Bilal and Zain. This week it is Suhaana.

The Highland Games

This week our class has competed In a house challenge called the Highland games. The activities included; The Caber Toss, where you had to through a pole and try to land it in a twelve o’clock position, An Obstacle Course with hurdles, a ladder and hoops, Discus when you have to throw a disc as far as you can, and the Shot Put when you push a small heavy ball as far as you can. The winning house was Oak, followed by Beech, Cedar, Maple then Poplar.

Leadership Roles

Over the past few weeks we have been looking at leadership roles in P7. We had 14 people sign up for prefects and 4 for house captain. We have been lucky to have 2 house captains and 4 prefects in our class. Other leadership roles specific to p7 like giglet gurus, peer mediators, lab technicians, digital leaders and STEM embassiders are yet to be announced but everyone is looking forward to hearing the results.

Space Circles

This week we have been looking at diameter, circumference , radius and area. Our task was to pick a planet out of the solar system and find out the diameter, circumference, radius and area (if the planet was chopped in half). If you scroll to the top you will see some pictures of the planets.

Creative Art, Coding and Writing!

This week we have been doing creative art and coding. We have made Lego Spike robots and have coded them for fun. Take a look! We have also been making our own adventure games during Mearns Masters! We have been split into 6 groups. And in the next 3 weeks we will have created 6 adventure games which we wills be presenting to ‘publishers’!

We have been learning about and creating 1 point and 2 point perspective. We have been learning shading and creating our own pieces of art using our names!
During the past 3 weeks we have been writing our own killer stories, using adjectives, verbs, nouns, adverbs, similes and metaphors. We have been doing lots of planning and now we are writing it on Google Docs.

Leaders of Learning – Monday 🎨🦠⚽️

This week groups of pupils from 6.24  have worked together to create and deliver their own lessons on a subject of their choice.

Today pupils from 6.24 delivered the following fabulous lessons:

Close-Up Animal Art – Taught by Mr Thomson

History of Pandemics – Taught by Miss McDonald, Miss Mogal, Miss Roy and Miss Watson

Football Skills – Mr Ali,  Mr Campbell-Finnie, Mr Douglas, and Mr Sandher

All of the pupils did an amazing job and their lessons were very well organised and delivered, a huge well done to all of you!

Election Fever 🗳

In P6 we have been learning about democracy and the Scottish Parliament. We have created our own Political Parties and decided what our priorities are for our Election Campaign. For our campaign we have created: leaflets, posters, speeches, broadcasts, rosettes and even websites.

We hope to share all of our work with our parents, families and friends at home who will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite political party!

Angle Art 🖼 📐

The sun was shining and the weather was kind for out first day back after the holidays! We took full advantage of the nice weather by taking our maths learning outdoors today.

The children in 6.24 worked in groups using chalk and masking tape to make geometric art on the ground. The children then sorted the shapes they had made into triangles and quadrilaterals. After this, they were then able to consolidate their previous learning on internal angles by measuring the angles and checking they added up to 180 degrees for the triangles and 360 degrees for the quadrilaterals. The pupils also applied their new skill of using a protractor during this task.

Innovating our School for the Future💡

We have been super busy in 6.24 since returning to the classroom. We have been working on lots of STEM tasks which involved a lot of problem solving, collaboration and creativity. The theme of British Science Week and Mearns Primary’s STEM Fortnight was ‘Innovating for the Future’. We were tasked with redesigning our school to make it ‘pandemic proof’.

Before we got started on our tasks we had the opportunity to learn more about architecture. A parent at Mearns Primary very kindly prepared a presentation about her job as an architect and was able to answer some of our questions about some of the current trends in building design. We learned that modern buildings should: enhance natural light, incorporate flexible spaces, be sustainable, bring the outside in and most importantly should be inclusive. We had a lot of discussion about these design features and the ways in which a building could include these features.

The class worked in six groups to innovate the school’s gym hall, street, corridors, classrooms, playground and toilets. After listing the pros and cons of these current spaces, we researched how we could innovate these spaces for the future. We discussed sustainability, wheel chair access, light tunnels, bi-folding doors and OF COURSE automatic hand sanitizers! 😂

After many lists and drafts sketches were created we finally created a poster and brochure capturing our ideas, research and designs. Have a look at some of our creations in the gallery below!

World Book Day 📚

Hello everyone!

We celebrated World Book Day over Google Meet today where we played a World Book Day themed Kahoot quiz, shared our favourite books and some of us decided to dress up as famous characters from books!

Throughout the week some of the pupils of 6.24 have created different things in celebration of world book day. Some pupils created 3D models of famous scenes from books and other pupils decided to create ‘fan pages’ on Google Sites!

Occasional Poetry 📝

Primary 6 have just finished their poetry writing block. Over the last five weeks the pupils have enjoyed learning about the different style of poetry and the rules that come with them. For their final poetry lesson primary six were challenged to create a piece of occasional poetry. Strict poetry rules were removed in order for the pupils to express their creativity and create something that was personal to them. The pupils were asked to draw on personal experiences and what is going on in the world to inspire the theme of their poem.

The pupils were shown Amanda Gorman’s poem ‘The Hill We Climb’ as inspiration. They then had to choose a line from the poem that really stood out to include in their own poem. You can watch her recite her poem at President Biden’s inauguration here  – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz4YuEvJ3y4

Here are some OUTSTANDING pieces of poetry created by Isabella and Alexander which were inspired by Amanda Gorman’s poem. Both of these poems capture the message of hope and unity that Amanda Gorman’s poem sought to inspire!

Financial Education 💸

6.24 have received a series of lessons on financial education over the last month. The pupils have really enjoyed learning about money and banks. This week the pupils were tasked with creating their own bank, they had to create a name, design a logo and decide which services their bank would provide.

Whilst completing this today Olivia asked if she could create a google site for her bank. This inspired both myself and some of her fellow classmates to do the same and create a website for their bank! Such a creative way to reinforce their learning and digital skills! 🌟

Sophie also made her own site and even designed a debit card! Click on the GIF below to view her website.

An outstanding example of pupil led work!
