Occasional Poetry πŸ“

Primary 6 have just finished their poetry writing block. Over the last five weeks the pupils have enjoyed learning about the different style of poetry and the rules that come with them. For their final poetry lesson primary six were challenged to create a piece of occasional poetry. Strict poetry rules were removed in order for the pupils to express their creativity and create something that was personal to them. The pupils were asked to draw on personal experiences and what is going on in the world to inspire the theme of their poem.

The pupils were shown Amanda Gorman’s poem ‘The Hill We Climb’ as inspiration. They then had to choose a line from the poem that really stood out to include in their own poem. You can watch her recite her poem at President Biden’s inauguration hereΒ  – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz4YuEvJ3y4

Here are some OUTSTANDING pieces of poetry created by Isabella and Alexander which were inspired by Amanda Gorman’s poem. Both of these poems capture the message of hope and unity that Amanda Gorman’s poem sought to inspire!
