JP Morgan Competition!

Last week we had a visit from a couple of people from JP Morgan to tell us about the competition they are having called ‘Make it Happen’. The idea is that the children will design their own app detailing who would use it, why they would use it, what the app would do  and what it would look like on the screen. During STEM fortnight, JP Morgan will spend a morning with the winning designer and create their app which will be available on the app store!

The children have started to design their app in class and have come up with lots of interesting ideas! I have sent the form home as part of their homework and it doesn’t need to be handed back until Friday the 14th of February. Follow the link below for further information and to see previous winners’ ideas.

Incorporating maths

The children have been learning about the Romans as part of our Social Studies topic. We have also been learning to sort information into a Venn diagram. The children wanted to use their knowledge of Venn diagrams and apply these skills in different contexts i.e. using 3D shapes and pieces of Roman clothing.

We have also been learning about the Solar System in Science. The children discovered that our planets are not the same distance apart. They used trundle wheels to measure out the scale distance between the planets! We discovered that the ‘rocky planets’ are a lot closer together than the ‘gas giants’.

Week beginning 18/11/19

This week some of the children in the class went on a trip to Specsavers to find out about the role of an optician. (Another group of children will be going on Monday!)

We have been continuing with the topic of measure this week in maths, exploring and experimenting with volume and capacity. The children learned about the units we use to measure volume, reading scales and estimating the volume different containers hold.

Week beginning 10/11/19

This week the children have been practising their drama skills using our RME topic of Buddhism. We listened to the story of ‘The Buddha’ and acted out the story in groups.

We have also been learning about measure in maths this week. The children carried out lots of practical activities. They were investigating how far their toy cars could travel, measuring classroom objects and putting them in order and matching different objects to what measuring instrument they would use.

Week beginning 23/9/19

Primary 3.10 have been learning about adjectives, nouns and verbs this week. The children did some fishing, using magnets, to find either an adjective, verb or noun and write a sentence which included the word they found. They were also looking for these different words in newspapers and cut them out!

We have also been exploring germs (how easy it is for them to spread and what we can do to stop them spreading). We carried out an experiment using glitter to see how germs can spread. There was a discussion afterwards about how we need to make sure we wash our hands properly. The children completed a step by step guide on how to wash your hands!
