{"id":15,"date":"2015-02-20T11:25:16","date_gmt":"2015-02-20T11:25:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ed\/turnbullenglish\/?page_id=15"},"modified":"2019-09-03T17:25:03","modified_gmt":"2019-09-03T17:25:03","slug":"national-5","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ed\/turnbullenglish\/our-courses\/national-5\/","title":{"rendered":"National 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"first-para\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/nl\/EnglishatClydeValley\/files\/2011\/08\/Sqa_logo.png\" rel=\"lightbox[878]\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Sqa_logo\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/nl\/EnglishatClydeValley\/files\/2011\/08\/Sqa_logo-300x159.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0National 5\u00a0course is run from S4 to S6.\u00a0It allows pupils to progress from the Broad General Education received through CfE in S1-S3 and work towards\u00a0attaining a Higher award in S5\/6.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Recent changes to the National 5 course structure offer 2 different course pathways for pupils: a full <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Course Award<\/span>, achieved at the end of the year by successfully completing the exam, or a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Units Only<\/span> approach where pupils will complete internal assessments in place of the final exam. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The pathway followed by each pupil will be agreed on an individual basis and based upon the progress and achievement demonstrated by the pupil over the course of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0National 5\u00a0 units include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Analysis and\u00a0Evaluation<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A unit which looks at the skills of and Reading and Listening and develops pupils\u2019 abilities to analyse specific literary techniques.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Creation and Production<\/strong>&#8211; A unit which looks at the skills of Writing and Talking and assesses pupils\u2019 abilities to produce texts (written and spoken)\u00a0in a variety of genres.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The units are assessed in class by the teacher and verified externally by the SQA. <strong>These internal assessments will only be undertaken by those pupils following the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Units Only<\/span> pathway.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For those pupils following the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Course Award<\/strong><\/span> route, \u00a0a<strong> Writing Folio <\/strong>is also required<strong>&#8211;<\/strong> A selection of two\u00a0writing pieces from different genres,\u00a0which are sent away to the exam board for external marking and make up 30% of the overall final grade. There will also be a formal <strong>Spoken Language Assessment<\/strong> that must be completed prior to the exam.<\/p>\n<p>The final exam takes place at the end of the year and is set by the SQA. It includes two exam papers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A Close Reading passage with detailed questions<\/li>\n<li><strong>Critical Reading<\/strong> \u2013 One timed\u00a0Critical Essay on a text studied in class\u00a0(from a selection of unseen questions) and one set of analysis questions on a Scottish Text studied previously in class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The exam counts for 70% of your final grade.<\/p>\n<p>Your overall award is made up by combining your grades from both the final exam and the writing folio.<\/p>\n<p>A copy of the\u00a0Scottish text list, prescribed by the SQA, can be found below. All N5 candidates will study at least one of these texts.
