Apprenticeship Information

What is an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships allow you to gain a formal qualification, for example an SVQ, whilst gaining practical skills. Your employer will also pay you a wage during your apprenticeship.

There are 3 different types of apprenticeships that you can choose:

Foundation apprenticeships allow you to learn the skills that you need for your future while you are still at school. It is the same level as a Higher and can be an alternative subject choice in S5 and/ or S6. It allows you to gain valuable work experience which could help you to find employment.
Foundation apprenticeships are available in the following areas: 
Accountancy, Business skills, Civil Engineering, Creative and Digital Media, Engineering, Financial Services, Food and Drink Technologies, Hardware and System Support, Scientific Technologies, Social Services – children and young people, Social Services and Healthcare and Software Development.

Modern apprenticeships allow you to learn the skills you need whilst on the job. This means you earn a wage as you complete your apprenticeship. There are more than 80 types of Modern Apprenticeship across hundreds of jobs, so you can find one that suits you. You get the experience employers are looking for – from skills for work, to handy things like timekeeping, taking responsibility and teamwork. It’s a real alternative to full-time college or uni. By learning on the job, you get to put your skills to the test right away.

Graduate apprenticeships are similar to Modern apprenticeships – you earn as you learn but you are working towards a University degree at the same time.
