S3 Dementia Friends Music Performance Programme

Mind that Song

2018

3rd year music students performing to the Dementia Friends Group in the local community

This year, all pupils in S3 will be registered to become a Dementia Friend as part of the Wider Achievement Programme in conjunction with the Alzheimers Society Initiative.
They will receive training during a Dementia Friends Information Session in October.

A Dementia Friend learns a little bit more about what it’s like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action – anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend.
Dementia Friends is about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help. From telling friends about Dementia Friends to visiting someone you know living with dementia, every action counts.

There will be opportunities throughout S3 for you to work with people living with Dementia. In S3 Music Performance you will take part in a monthly event called ‘Mind That Song’. Mind That Song is a service provided by Alzheimer Scotland which uses singing to bring people together in a friendly and stimulating social environment.
There will also be opportunities for pupils to organise staff coffee mornings to raise funds for the charity.

S3 Music students prepare a variety of music as an ensemble to perform to the Dementia Friends Group within the local community. The pupils contribute to the decision making and performance instructions of each piece of music that they prepare. There is a theme connected to each month and the students choose music that they would like to arrange and perform. The pupils also get the opportunity to talk to the Dementia Friends audience before and after the performance.
