Amnesty International and Fairtrade

The Amnesty International and Fair Trade group is made up of pupils who are dedicated to understanding more about the world around them and helping others who are less fortunate than them.

This year the group has organised a number of events to help pupils broaden their understanding of issues surrounding global citizenship and engage the whole school community in real world issues.

In February we organised a sponsored “Give it Up for Human Rights” Event. Pupils in S2, S5 and S6 gave up a different right each day of Dignity Week. This gave pupils the opportunity to put themselves in the shoes of people in other countries whose rights have been taken away from them.

We also organised a tuck shop for Fair Trade Fortnight. We organised a fun quiz and sold all sorts of Fair Trade goodies for teachers and pupils to try. This raised pupils’ awareness of the Fairtrade products available and helped them to understand why Fair Trade is important. The Tuck Shop raised £80 for the Fair Trade Organisation.

We are currently combining our IT skills with Amnesty International by running a QR code petition around the school. Pupils have the opportunity to have their voice heard on important world issues like women’s rights and the death penalty.
