Willowbank is proud to be an officially certified member of the Makaton Friendly Scheme. Through the continued hard work of our teachers, classroom assistants and speech and language therapist, Willowbank continues to be a communication-rich environment for pupils with severe, complex and profound needs.

All staff and pupils are encouraged to use signing and symbols throughout their school day to interact with others, give their opinions and have their say. Parents and partner agencies are invited to our regular workshops held in school and we even recently hosted the filming of Something Special’s new series.

Terri Lazzari of the Makaton Charity said:

“The Makaton Friendly scheme, which recognises establishments of all kinds where Makaton users will feel at home, is going from strength to strength. In addition to places of education we are working with sports organisations, attractions, retail and hospitality outlets including many big names. This ensures that the excellent work done by schools such as Willowbank continues within the community to ensure that all visitors are welcome.”
