{"id":6190,"date":"2023-09-04T14:09:40","date_gmt":"2023-09-04T14:09:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/whatriggseccmain2019\/?page_id=6190"},"modified":"2026-09-11T11:30:24","modified_gmt":"2026-09-11T11:30:24","slug":"rights-respecting-school","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/whatriggseccmain2019\/rights-respecting-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Rights Respecting School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org.uk\/rights-respecting-schools\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/horizontal_logo-x2-rrs.png\" \/> \u00a0 <strong>WHAT IS THE UNCRC?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"sp-full-height\">\n<div class=\"sp-link-container ng-scope\">\n<div class=\"css-1dbjc4n r-1ss6j8a r-1qortcd r-m611by r-13qz1uu\" data-testid=\":msg-caption-text\">\n<div class=\"css-901oao r-11sbt46 r-1adg3ll r-1omiw69 r-ubezar r-s1qlax\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>(UNCRC)\u00a0<\/strong>is a legally-binding international agreement setting out the\u00a0<strong>civil, political, economic, social\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>cultural rights\u00a0<\/strong>of every child, regardless of their race, religion or abilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHAT IS CONTAINED IN THE UNCRC?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The UNCRC consists of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cypcs.org.uk\/wpcypcs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/UNCRC-Symbols-Accessible-Version.pdf\">54 articles<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>that set out children\u2019s rights and how governments should work together to make them\u00a0<strong>available to all children<\/strong>.<br \/>\nUnder the terms of the convention, governments are required to\u00a0<strong>meet children\u2019s basic needs\u00a0<\/strong>and help them\u00a0<strong>reach their full potential<\/strong>. Central to this is the acknowledgment that every child has basic fundamental rights. These include the right to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Life<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>survival\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>development<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Protection\u00a0<\/strong>from\u00a0<strong>violence<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>abuse\u00a0<\/strong>or\u00a0<strong>neglect<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>An\u00a0<strong>education\u00a0<\/strong>that enables children to\u00a0<strong>fulfil their potential<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Be\u00a0<strong>raised by<\/strong>, or have a\u00a0<strong>relationship with<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>their parents<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Express their opinions\u00a0<\/strong>and be\u00a0<strong>listened to<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ss-top-padding-sm sp-item-footer-container\">\n<div class=\"sp-row-container\">\n<div class=\"sp-row-col-right-fixed\">\n<p><strong>What do we do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At Whatriggs ECC rights are at the heart of our practice. We use UNCRC articles to support safeguarding, children\u2019s voices, education, play, and health and well being factors.<\/p>\n<p>Within the Centre children have opportunities to learn about their rights through play experiences, staff interactions and resources. Daily routines such as snack and access to the outdoors play a vital part in securing and supporting rights.<\/p>\n<p>Children have daily access to many of the rights within the setting\u00a0 e.g. hand washing routine, snack, lunch and water and free play outdoors.<\/p>\n<p>We celebrate different cultures and rights to religion etc.\u00a0 All children\u00a0 have the chance to take home Rosie and Ruby Right our home links.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we hope the benefits will be?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Children to become aware of their rights and identify areas of their life, whither at home or in the nursery that secure and promote and provide their rights.
