{"id":21,"date":"2019-08-29T13:58:13","date_gmt":"2019-08-29T13:58:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/whatriggseccmain2019\/?page_id=21"},"modified":"2025-02-06T10:15:30","modified_gmt":"2025-02-06T10:15:30","slug":"literacy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/whatriggseccmain2019\/staff-champion-roles\/literacy-working-party\/literacy\/","title":{"rendered":"Literacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #cc99ff;font-size: 16px;font-weight: 400\">Literacy in Early Years<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">There are a large variety of opportunities and experiences for children to develop their Literacy skills in Early Years, through <strong>&#8220;Listening and Talking&#8221;<\/strong>, &#8220;<strong>Reading&#8221;<\/strong> and &#8220;<strong>Writing&#8221;.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">We follow the Early Level of the Curriculum for Excellence, which is a learning, teaching and assessment tool that highlights and identifies different aspects of Literacy development for children ages 3-5 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">We focus on pre-literacy skills in Early Years, where children explore, investigate and practice the foundation skills that they will need in later life through education and in to adulthood. This includes, pre-writing, pre-reading and listening and talking skills. Developing literacy skills impacts on our children&#8217;s future and there are many skills that ourselves as adults have or rely on, from every day tasks to important aspects of our adult life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Examples of how literacy skills may be useful or important in adulthood:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;text-decoration: underline\">Reading:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Reading an email or a letter in the post<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Reading a road sign or a hazard sign<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Following instructions or directions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;text-decoration: underline\">Writing:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Applying for a job, filling out the application form<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Writing your shopping list<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Filling out a prescription form<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;text-decoration: underline\">Listening and Talking:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Expressing how you are feeling or asking for help<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Being able to have a conversation with someone, whether it be face to face or on the phone<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">To be able to build relationships with others<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">If you think of how many times in a day you rely on literacy skills, whether that is during daily tasks in the home, during your drive to or from work, in your working day or even during your leisure time when relaxing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Literacy is important for us all and it starts with our children and young people exploring, investigating and playing with these skills.
