Outer Maths – Beyond Numbers

Shape

In term 1 our Outer Maths topic was 2D and 3D shapes. We looked at properties of shapes; counting the number of sides, faces, and vertices of each shape. We then used this criterion to sort 2D and 3D shapes.

Measurement

Our term 2 outer maths topic has been Measurement. We have been looking at area and length.

We used various non-standard units as well as rulers and metre sticks to measure the length of objects around the classroom. Measuring our friends and Miss Love became popular too!

We estimated the length of an object using centimetres and then took the exact measurement to check. Some of our estimates were very accurate.

Area

As we near the end of term 2 we have been investigating the area of objects using different items. We measured our desks with textbooks (it has an area of 13 textbooks) and we measured the area of a workbook using Post-it Notes (it has an area of 9 Post-it Notes). We then investigated the area of our smallest jotter using cubes. We discovered our jotters have an area of 82 cubes.

IDL

As part of our Woodlands topic, we have been exploring the interdependence cycle. In this session we were looking at plants and their parts. We visited the Knowe Garden and created a table to discover what the most popular types of plants were. We could identify the stems, roots, leaves and petals.
