May 2025 – A Snapshot of our Learning

Primary 2/3 have been very busy recently. Here is a wee taster of what we have been up to!

Literacy

Reading

We have been working very hard on our reading skills. We get a chance every day to practise our fluency by reading aloud in small groups or in pairs.

We have been especially focused on developing our comprehension skills and we are becoming very clever ‘reading detectives’. We are able to answer different kinds of questions about a text and show how we found the answer. We can ‘find it, prove it and talk about it’!

Phonics and Spelling

We are making great progress in our phonics. Learning about how letters work together to make sounds helps us with our reading and writing.

A big focus has been ‘magic e’ and how it changes the vowel sound.

Writing

We have been learning how to write a recount of events. We explored and identified the features of a recount text then we had a go at writing our own recounts.

Talking and Listening

We use our talking and listening skills all the time but we have a special focus each week during Check-in/Circle Time. We listen respectfully to each other and we have been able to use our knowledge about recounts to help us to share our news in time order and in greater detail. Excellent!

On Wednesday it was Jamie’s birthday so we sang to her and took turns to ask her some really good questions all about her birthday. Happy birthday Jamie!

Maths and Numeracy

Our learning focus is currently 2D and 3D shapes. We are really enjoying this as we have been outside and all around the school on ‘Shape Hunts’. We were amazed to notice how surrounded we are by a huge variety of shapes. ( No pics- sorry, we were too busy!)

We have been using various resources to sort and identify 2D shapes, exploring their properties.

We are proud of some of the designs we have created.

Health and Wellbeing

Recently we have been learning about healthy lifestyles. We have been talking about nutrition and healthy and less healthy food choices. We had the chance to taste a variety of fruits and talked about our likes and dislikes.

In PE we have begun a block of Athletics, to get us ready  for Sports Day later in the month. So far we have worked on relays , sprinting and hurdles.

We have also been recording our active travel to school every day on the ‘Living Streets Travel Tracker’. We are very excited to report that our class is currently winning in the school league table!

Expressive Arts/ IDL

We have been looking at how the world around us changes during Springtime and investigating the processes of nature. We explored our own school grounds and the Knowe Garden next door. We recorded what we saw and heard and wrote a recount of our walk.

Look at our cheerful daffodils!

We also learned about the Brazilian artist Romero Britto, whose sculpture is in the playground at Dumfries House.

We created lovely hearts inspired by his work, using oil pastels.

RE

During the Month of May we will learn about Mary, Mother of Jesus. We have already begun creating a May altar at our sacred table by making some lovely flower bouquets.

Open Afternoon

This week we were delighted to be joined in class by a number of parents and carers. We loved showing off all our fantastic work. Thank you so much to those who could make it!

We hope you have enjoyed our snapshot of life in P2/3!

A Snapshot of our Learning- November 2024

IDL

We have had a busy time over the last wee while investigating Autumn and the changing of the seasons. We have been keeping a weather diary which means we have been outside a lot. We have been using our senses to explore the weather and chat about what we see , feel etc recording our findings. We have learned about temperature and weather forecasts.

It has gotten a lot colder this week which led to lots of fantastic questions. “What is frost? ”  “Why does our breath look like dragon smoke  when it’s cold?” “How can the numbers go below zero?”

Autumn Artwork

We collected lots of leaves and used them to create funny leaf people. We also created beautiful Autumn trees using our fingers to print with warm colours.

Here is some more of our recent artwork.

For our Fabulous Fireworks we used the end of a paintbrush to drag the paint outwards to create an explosion effect. Then we drew the silhouette of rooftops, painted it grey and very carefully cut it out. We love how they turned out.

We decided to create Poppies for Remembrance. We used a sponge printing technique and layered red and orange circles. We think that look brilliant even though they were quite easy to do.

Dancing Fun

We have been perfecting our Grand Old Duke of York dance for our Christmas party. Mrs Duffy thought we were so good that we had a go at the Canadian Barn Dance and we did really well , even though the music was so fast! Phew!

We are planning to learn the Gay Gordons  too.

Open Afternoon for parents/carers

On Thursday afternoon we welcomed a number of parents in to our class to see what we have been learning. We showed them some of our work and we demonstrated some of the resources we use to help us with our literacy and numeracy. P3s were excited to show off what they can do with their Chromebooks.

Numeracy

We have been working very hard on our numeracy and are becoming  confident in our understanding of Place Value.  We are able to use a wide variety of hands-on materials (manipulatives) to support our thinking.

P3s completing a poster of understanding using Place Value Dice.

P2s counting in 2s

Building numbers with Base Ten materials
P3s building numbers to 999

There are some amazing mathematicians in P2/3 who are absolutely brilliant at spotting patterns in our number system!

Literacy

In  Literacy we have had a focus on reading for enjoyment recently and have loved exploring a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts from within our class library. We also have  regular visits to Auchinleck library where we have time to read and relax and choose a book to borrow and bring back to school.

We have had fun exploring the books of Julia Donaldson in particular. We discussed our favourite stories, characters and illustrations. We created story maps and learned about descriptive writing.

We used describing bubbles to plan our writing about Spinderella.

Play

Of course there is always plenty of time for free play and creativity and exploration in P2/3.

This week your child will be given a reading book in a homework pack. This book will already have been covered in class and is for extra practice at blending and reading fluency. Please enjoy and discuss the story together. There are some useful ideas for chat or follow up inside the back cover.

Don’t feel you need to do the whole book in one go. It’s fine to focus on a few pages a night if that’s easier to manage.
