\n Sponsored walk – October 2022 <\/h3>\n

As part of our commitment to Rights Respecting Schools, pupils and staff in the SLC completed another sponsored walk to Dumfries House on Friday 14th October to raise money for Jebbeh Kiazolu School in Liberia, Africa. We raised an amazing total of \u00a3561 and had great fun on the day!\u00a0<\/p>\n

Pupils in the Supported Learning Centre at the Robert Burns Academy and Lochnorris Primary have been learning a lot recently about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Each month they have chosen a particular right to focus on and find out more about. In November and December they learned about Article 24, the right to good health, food and clean water.\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Pupils found out that some children in other countries, as well as in our country, are not accessing this very basic right to good food and nutrition. They decided to do something about it by raising money to help sponsor a school in Liberia so that pupils there could receive a decent meal every day at school. They also decided to start up a foodbank to support children in our own community who are facing hardship. Together the pupils in the Supported Learning Centre along with their teachers and parents donated several bags full of tinned vegetables, pasta, sugar, coffee and other items to support vulnerable families throughout the winter.<\/div>\n

\n Fundraising for Children’s Rights <\/h3>\n

\n

Pupils in the SLC have decided to take the lead in starting up our sponsorship again of Jebbeh Kiazolu school in Liberia, Africa. This began several years ago at Cumnock and Auchinleck Academies but had stopped in recent years due to the merger and the pandemic. The sponsorship involves fundraising every year to pay for the charity Mary\u2019s Meals to run a kitchen in Jebbeh Kiazolu school so that every child there can receive a daily meal. Pupils can then attend their lessons on a full stomach and in doing so access their right to education as well as their right to nutritious food.<\/p>\n

This is a great way for pupils in SLC to learn about children\u2019s rights and global citizenship. By fundraising and taking action in support of rights they are realising that they can really make a difference to other young people’s lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Rights Respecting School group within the SLC has decided to organise a series of fundraising events throughout the year, starting with a sponsored walk through the Dumfries House estate on 8th<\/sup> October. As well as donating to Jebbeh Kiazolu, we also intend to contribute to local charities that support children’s rights within our own communities.\u00a0Watch this space for information and photographs of our fundraising ventures!<\/p>\n

SLC pupil during completing their sponsored walk for children’s rights on Friday 8th October. It poured with rain all day but it didn’t dampen their spirits or determination to complete the five mile round trip from the school to Dumfries House estate. Together the pupils and staff in SLC raised an amazing \u00a3689!!!<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
