The Higher Modern Languages course offers learners the opportunity to develop detailed and complex language skills in the four contexts of Society, Learning, Employability and Culture. It provides learners with the opportunity to build on skills and knowledge from National 5 in Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. Learners will also develop a more in-depth understanding of how language works and will use language to communicate ideas, opinions and information. The course will also enhance their enjoyment and understanding of their own and other cultures.
Course Structure: The final exam consists of 3 exam papers, a performance in Speaking and a Writing Assignment.
Paper 1: Reading and Translation – Pupils will have to read a passage in the target language and show their understanding by answering comprehension questions in English. They will also be given a small part of the text to translate into English. (30 marks)
Paper 2: Directed Writing – Pupils will have to write an essay in the past tense from a choice of two scenarios and they must include the 6 bullet points they are given. (20 marks)
Paper 3: Listening: – Pupils will have to listen to a monologue and a dialogue in the target language and answer comprehension questions on what they have heard. (20 marks)
Performance: Speaking – Pupils will have to take part in a 10 minute conversation in the target language which covers 2 topics of their choice. (30 marks)
Writing Assignment – A discursive Essay on a topic of their choice. (this is marked by SQA and is worth 20 marks)
