Anderson Shelter STEM Challenge

Working in pairs, Primary 7 were set the task of building an Anderson Shelter out of junk materials. First they had to research five interesting facts about the shelters and were then given 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete the task.

The results were amazing. I was hugely impressed by their creativity and cooperation.

The end results were amazing, as you can see below! One very proud teacher.

LOST – Outdoor Learning

Primary 7 welcome Mrs Baird from the East Ayrshire LOST team. Despite our perseverance the rain was just too heavy and we had to take our outdoor learning indoors. The children made responsibility friendship bracelets, each strand representing a different responsibility; one to themselves, to others and to the wider world.

We then looked at how we could use out outdoor objects, such as sticks and rocks for a variety of different games.

Huge thank you to Mrs Baird, we can’t wait until your next visit.

Primary 7 Term 1 Newsletter

Literacy

This term the children will be reading two novels with a WW2 theme, Goodnight Mister Tom and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. The children will continue to use their Active Literacy reading strategies to help them demonstrate their understanding of the texts.

Media Block

As part of our work on literacy the children will interpret the film The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, by looking at character, camera angles, colour, setting, sound and themes .

The children will analyse this film and work together to write a critical analyse of the film, focusing on one particular area. The film focuses on the theme of the Holocaust and the children will have a good understanding of the story due to reading the novel in class.

A permission form, allowing the children to watch the film, will be sent home closer to the time.

Writing

The children will have the opportunity to write in many different genres through our topic, including reports, biographies and poetry, however our writing focus will be on narrative texts. As with all pieces of writing the children will pay particular attention to their Tools for Writing as well as descriptive aspects of narrative.

Numeracy

Number Talks will take place in class at least three times a week with the initial focus on addition and subtraction strategies.

Initially the children will be working with angles. The children will use a protractor to measure angles accurately and will develop an understanding of supplementary, alternate and corresponding angles.

Our number work will focus on common factors, prime numbers and order of operations. The children will use their knowledge of these areas to solve a variety of word problems.

As the term progresses will will also continue to build on the classes knowledge of fractions, decimals and percentages.

Through our topic, the class will be working with data, creating and analysing graphs.

IDL

The main IDL focus will be on World War 2. The Class have already begun work on this area and have shared with me the areas they would like to learn more about. As part of this topic the children will be asked to complete a homework task. This will be a research project, on an area of their choice and a speech on a significant figure from WW2.

The Primary 7 will continue on their John Muir journey and aim to achieve their Explorer Award. As part of this work they will take full responsibility for the school garden and create community projects.

Health and Well-being

The children will focus on different areas in PE, Netball and athletics with myself on a Monday and Hockey, Social Dancing and Fitness on a Wednesday.

The class will continue to develop their emotional vocabulary, through Emotion Works and gain a deeper understanding of the cog structure within this programme.

Technology

As the class have been selected to be part of East Ayrshire Councils 1:1 device pilot, we will familiarise ourselves with Chromebooks and OneNote.  IT lessons will look at coding and using BBC MicroBits.

In French, the children will do some revision before moving onto the French alphabet, numbers to 100, pets and drinks.
