Primary 6 – Term 1 Learning Targets

Below is an overview of some of the areas Primary 6 will cover this year.

Numeracy

Some areas that will be covered this term include:

  • The Four Processes: we will be developing our knowledge and understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Formal methods, as well as mental strategies, will be taught throughout the term.
  • 2D shape: we will be looking at the properties of quadrilaterals and different types of triangles.
  • Place Value: we will be developing our knowledge of place value by looking into decimal numbers up to 3 decimal places.

Literacy

Reading

We have begun the term by reading ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ by Michael Morpurgo, which will be followed by ‘Goodnight, Mister Tom’ by Michelle Magorian. Active Literacy reading strategies (Prediction, Metalinguistics, Visualisation, Inference, Main Idea and Summary) will be used to help demonstrate a deeper understanding of the content being read in class.

The children will complete a media block on ‘Goodnight Mr Tom’ where we will discuss various aspects of the film including the director’s use of lighting, camera angles, sound and character development.

Writing

This term we will be completing various pieces of writing which link in with our topic on World War 2. We will complete newspaper articles, biographies and diary entries.

Our taught focus this term however will be narrative writing. We will be learning about personification, metaphors and similes in order to enhance our imaginative story writing even further.

Tools for writing (punctuation, paragraphing, spelling, connectives, and sentence openers) will continue to be a focus this term; with children learning how to use these features to enhance their writing further across all of their writing across the curriculum.

Listening and Talking

Later this term, the children will be asked to prepare a speech on an influential figure during World War 2. Details and dates to follow later in the term.

I.D.L.

The children will be working towards their Discover John Muir award which will take us out into the school grounds and wider village on a regular basis.

We have already begun our IDL topic on World War 2. Some of the areas we will be learning about are: The Axis and The Allies, and some information about their leaders; the evacuation; The Blitz; The Nagasaki Bombing and different planes and war equipment used.

Health and Wellbeing

The children will be continuing their work from Primary 5 on Emotion Works. We will mainly be analysing the characters from our upcoming novel and relating these to our own personal experiences and emotions.

In P.E., we will be completing a block of learning on curling skills and basketball.

NCCT

Miss McCrae will be taking the class for an afternoon every week and will focus on French, Music and P.E.

During French, the children will be learning the alphabet, numbers to 50, pets and drinks. In music, the children will be learning songs which will accompany their topic on World War 2; alongside this, they will be completing work on pulse and rhythm. In P.E. the focuses will be mini-hockey skills, social dancing and a block on fitness and health.
