Primary 6 have been busy completing a STEM challenge. They had to work together to create a tank design and use the materials they were given to assemble their finished product!
Great work as always P6 😃

Great work as always P6 😃
We are learning about tenths, hundredths and thousandths and used concrete resources to show our understanding of decimal numbers.
Primary 6 spent this morning at the Quentin Blake Exhibition at the Dick Institute in Kilmarnock. They took part in a workshop which taught them how to draw in the style of the famous illustrator; and also got a chance to dress up and model for their groups! As you can see from the pictures, they had an absolutely amazing time!
I am one proud teacher today – Primary 6 have absolutely blown me away with their amazing speeches on influential figures during World War 2.
We have learnt about so many amazing and interesting people, including great grandparents and uncles Murdo Campbell, John Green, Ellen Smith, Alexander Campbell, Pearl Costello, Robert Adamson, Ronald and Edna Snelling, Lawrence and Mavis Ryan, Davie Stewart and Ronnie Callam.
We also heard fantastic speeches about: Nancy Wake, Winston Churchill, Jacqueline and Eileen Nearn, Fraser McClusky, Adolf Hitler, Alan Turing, Winston Churchill, Dwight D Eisenhower, Roald Dahl and Oskar Schindler.
Primary 6 took their learning outdoors (in the rain!) last week and were learning how to use and read compasses. We also explored the school garden by going on a sensory hunt.
We headed outside this week to complete an angle hunt, we looked for different types of angles within nature and had to identify what type we thought they were.
We also created these really cool geometric designs by drawing around a 2p coin, which required a lot of patience!
A fun morning curling, Primary 6 are very competitive!
Below is an overview of some of the areas Primary 6 will cover this year.
NumeracyÂ
Some areas that will be covered this term include:Â
Â
LiteracyÂ
ReadingÂ
We have begun the term by reading ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ by Michael Morpurgo, which will be followed by ‘Goodnight, Mister Tom’ by Michelle Magorian. Active Literacy reading strategies (Prediction, Metalinguistics, Visualisation, Inference, Main Idea and Summary) will be used to help demonstrate a deeper understanding of the content being read in class.Â
The children will complete a media block on ‘Goodnight Mr Tom’ where we will discuss various aspects of the film including the director’s use of lighting, camera angles, sound and character development. Â
Â
WritingÂ
This term we will be completing various pieces of writing which link in with our topic on World War 2. We will complete newspaper articles, biographies and diary entries.Â
Our taught focus this term however will be narrative writing. We will be learning about personification, metaphors and similes in order to enhance our imaginative story writing even further.Â
Tools for writing (punctuation, paragraphing, spelling, connectives, and sentence openers) will continue to be a focus this term; with children learning how to use these features to enhance their writing further across all of their writing across the curriculum. Â
Â
Listening and TalkingÂ
Later this term, the children will be asked to prepare a speech on an influential figure during World War 2. Details and dates to follow later in the term. Â
Â
I.D.L.Â
Â
The children will be working towards their Discover John Muir award which will take us out into the school grounds and wider village on a regular basis. Â
We have already begun our IDL topic on World War 2. Some of the areas we will be learning about are: The Axis and The Allies, and some information about their leaders; the evacuation; The Blitz; The Nagasaki Bombing and different planes and war equipment used. Â
Â
Health and WellbeingÂ
The children will be continuing their work from Primary 5 on Emotion Works. We will mainly be analysing the characters from our upcoming novel and relating these to our own personal experiences and emotions. Â
In P.E., we will be completing a block of learning on curling skills and basketball.Â
Â
NCCTÂ
Miss McCrae will be taking the class for an afternoon every week and will focus on French, Music and P.E.Â
During French, the children will be learning the alphabet, numbers to 50, pets and drinks. In music, the children will be learning songs which will accompany their topic on World War 2; alongside this, they will be completing work on pulse and rhythm. In P.E. the focuses will be mini-hockey skills, social dancing and a block on fitness and health.Â
