Mummification

We  researched how to mummify a person and then carried out a dramatisation of the whole process. We also focused on functional writing to write clear instructions.

Following that we carried out an experiment to mummify an apple.

Please note no child was harmed or preserved in this process!

Z.B. was the unlucky Pharaoh who died and had to be embalmed in class. She loved every minute of it.

Step 1 .

C. and L. wash her thoroughly with water  from the River Nile.

Step 2

A. and B. cut out her organs from a cut on her left hand side. Each one is placed in a canopic jar apart from the heart.

Step 3

Z.T. uses a hook up Z.B’s nose to remove the brain. She has to wiggle around  to create liquid then pour the (now liquid) brain out of her nose.  Acted out only !

Step 4

Now our mummy will be dried for 40 days.

Step 5

E. and C. have the lovely job of putting on the resin (glue) and wrapping her in linen strips.

Step 6

Finally P4 added the Scarab beetle amulet and said a prayer for our Pharaoh that we decided should be Cleopatra. We wish her well in the afterlife.

Science – Mummifying an Apple

We needed : salt, bicarbonate of soda, an apple, knife and bowls.

We carved a quarter of an apple in to a mummy shape.

We made two for our experiment.

One was preserved in natron (mix of salt and bicarbonate soda).

The other apple had nothing done to it.

We made predictions of what we think will happen to each apple.

Watch this space for what happens next.

Snapshot Jotter Week in P4

Primary 4 have been  busy this week.

All of our work has been put in our Snapshot jotters to send home. We are excited to let our parents, grandparents and carers have a chance to see how clever we are.

Some of our work is tricky to put in a jotter so this week we have lots of photographs on the Blog to explain what we do in class.

Check our other posts this week for Maths Week and Mummification.

Super Spelling

We were diacritically marking this weeks words. You can see those in the jotter.

Some of us were building words on the magnetic board.

Look how proud C.T. is with his work.

R.R. was seeing ‘ay’,  ‘ee’ and ‘ea’ words everywhere this week – he made lots of connections. He was also making great progress with his spelling.

Growth Mindset

We have learned the difference between a fixed and a growth mindset. We are trying to use positive phrases and accept that mistakes are ok, in fact necessary to learn new things. We have made a thinking hat that shows our busy neurons firing when we think.

P4 were trying to use positive self talk this week and could change a negative comment to a Growth mindset one with ease.

We can do this !

Maths Week in P4

We have started to look at place value..

We have been busy using our whiteboards to show a number in different ways.

B. F. was very proud of his work.

We have also been playing games.

H. N. just found a match.

We were outside being creative to build a number from natural materials.

Egyptian Number System

We learned all about the symbols used to show a number. We enjoyed writing and working out the value of a number.

Great concentration here by C. M. and Z. T. on their Egyptian numbers.
