Numeracy Homework 13th November

This week we hope to finish our work on addition before moving onto subtraction.

We have learned the following strategies to help us-

  1. Partitioning numbers e.g 23 + 47 becomes (20 + 40) add (3 +7)
  2. Counting on using 100 squares and number lines, including blank number lines. Addition using a blank number line – YouTube
  3. Strategies for adding 9 or 11 e.g. add 10 then take away 1 or add ten and add 1 more.
  4. The standard written calculation.

Please ask your child how we can use each of these strategies by giving them some example calculations.

Pyramids: addition within 100 (two, two digit numbers e.g. 17 + 42)

Cubes: addition within 1000 (two, three digit numbers e.g. 125 + 236)

Cones: Addition within 10,000 (two or more, four digit numbers) as well as adding decimals with one decimal place (e.g. 2.3 + 0.8)

Apologies in the delay in posting homework.

Pyramids- We have been learning to use the standard written algorithm to add two, two digit numbers. This has been without carrying, although we have talked about this and demonstrated it using concrete materials so feel free to practice.

Column Addition Level 1 – Free PDF Worksheet

Cubes- We have been adding two, two digit numbers together using the written method as well as adding a three digit number to a two digit one and vice versa. We have been carrying but lots of practise would help.

Column Addition Level 2 – Free PDF Worksheet

Cones- We have been learning about decimals. We have been identifying tenths and learning to write this as a decimal and a as a fraction.

This week we are working on the standard written method for addition. You may know this as a ‘chimney sum’ or upstairs/downstairs calculation.

To help reinforce this children may access the website below. I will recommend levels but please let your child progress further if  they are able to do so.

The Column Method for Addition

Pyramids- Level 3 ( no exchange)

Cubes- Level 4 & 5 (with exchange)

Cones- Level 7

Numeracy Homework 2/10/24

Children have enjoyed playing ‘Double Archery’ in class. Here is a link if they want to practise at home. Archery Doubles – mobile friendly (ictgames.com)

We have been revising doubling single digits and learning to partition to double 2 or 3 digit numbers. Ask  your child to show you how we do this as good practise.
