This week we hope to finish our work on addition before moving onto subtraction.
We have learned the following strategies to help us-
- Partitioning numbers e.g 23 + 47 becomes (20 + 40) add (3 +7)
- Counting on using 100 squares and number lines, including blank number lines. Addition using a blank number line – YouTube
- Strategies for adding 9 or 11 e.g. add 10 then take away 1 or add ten and add 1 more.
- The standard written calculation.
Please ask your child how we can use each of these strategies by giving them some example calculations.
Pyramids: addition within 100 (two, two digit numbers e.g. 17 + 42)
Cubes: addition within 1000 (two, three digit numbers e.g. 125 + 236)
Cones: Addition within 10,000 (two or more, four digit numbers) as well as adding decimals with one decimal place (e.g. 2.3 + 0.8)
