Duke of Edinburgh Challenge 3rd May-8th May
Hello Everyone,
As we are all preparing for our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) this term I included in everyone’s learning targets to do a weekly challenge at home to help us build our fitness.
The DofE expedition consists of two days of walking with a night of camping in between. We have started training walks in school and everybody managed either the 3 mile walk last week or the 5 mile walk this week. Some managed both!
To encourage the class to participate there is going to be a points chart in class for each pupil. For every mile they walk they can earn a point to add to their chart. The winner can choose our end of term treat!
This week the challenge is to walk 2 miles and try to find the biggest stick you can. Please send us a screenshot of the route you took (to show you managed 2 miles) and a photo of you with your stick. If you can, measure your stick and let us know how long it is! My email is: eajulie.gallacher@glow.sch.uk
If you walk further you can earn an extra point for every mile on your training chart!
Please complete the challenge by the 8th of May so we can review everyone’s accomplishments in class on Friday and update our training chart in school.
I look forward to seeing all the walks you go on!
Mrs McMullan
Top Tips for the Walks
You can use Google maps to map out your walks and find how far you walked. You can add stops to make sure that it follows the route you actually walked as it will always default to the fastest routes between two places.
Gillian’s Walks – https://gillianswalks.com/walking-routes/
This is a great website to find walks to go on. You can filter the walks by location, distance and category (pick buggy friendly for a nice smooth walk).
Walk Highlands – https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/glasgow/ayrshire.shtml
These walks are measured in km so 2 miles would be 3.2km. The walk difficulty is rated in boots. 1 boot being the easiest.
Dean Park – https://eastayrshireleisure.com/media/8em5jgt3/dccp-map.pdf
There are 3 different levels of walks at the Dean Park, but feel free to make up your own!
VisoRando – https://www.visorando.com/en/walk-east-ayrshire.html
This is another website that has collated different walks in the local area and contains the distance and rates the difficulties.
