\/><\/p>\n<p>Before we introduce the phonemes (sounds) we start with skills to develop phonological awareness. Phonological Awareness is a set of skills that children need to recognise and work with the sounds of spoken language and is key in learning to read. It is a child\u2019s awareness of the sound structure, of words. We start with detection (can you identify the words that rhyme) before we move on to production (can you give me a word that rhymes with&#8230;). Rhyming should be auditory, it should be about hearing the rhyme so we try not to let pupils see how the words are spelt. Rhyme helps with sounding\/blending and builds up confidence for writing.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff00ff\">Syllables<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-188\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/public\/p1transitionatjhpsandsncn\/uploads\/sites\/18209\/2022\/05\/02121608\/syllable-clipart-spider.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Children need to hear syllables in words before they can begin to hear individual sounds. Eg. the letter a (as in ant) not ai (as in aim). This will help blending.<\/div>\n<div>\u2022The letters have not been introduced in alphabetical order.
