A key part of being in Primary 7 is your ability to help your Primary 1 buddy settle into school.

Design a game/ activity that you think your Primary 1 buddy would be able to play to help them in an area of their learning. For example, it could be a Literacy game to help with their phonics, a Numeracy game to help them with their numbers or a Health and Wellbeing game to help them with their emotions.

KAL – Idioms

Idioms

Idioms are phrases or sayings which we use in everyday language. These phrases or sayings don’t always make sense literally but we can still understand what they mean!

For example:

‘To let the cat out of the bag’

This idiom is not about letting a cat escape from a bag!

It’s actually about revealing a secret that should have remained a secret.

Look at the idioms below.

On one line of your book write out the idiom.

On the line below write down what you think this idiom is trying to tell you.

  1. To draw the long bow
  2. To bury the hatchet
  3. To mind one’s Ps and Qs
  4. To ride the high horse
  5. To hit below the belt
  6. To make a mountain out of a molehill
  7. To feather one’s nest
  8. To smell a rat
  9. To be at loggerheads
  10. To pay through the nose

KAL (Knowledge About Language)

Irregular past tense verbs

What are irregular verbs?
A verb is a doing or being word (for example: sit, talk, eat, think, feel).
A verb tense tells us when the action or state described by the verb happened. The three main verb tenses in English are the present, the past, and the future.
While most verbs form their different tenses according to an established “formula”, some verbs do not form their tenses in a regular way and are called irregular verbs

Some verbs are irregular and do not follow this pattern but form their past tense in a particular way (by changing a vowel, for example); sometimes their past participle is the same as the past tense (as it is in regular verbs), but sometimes it differs.

Blue and Red
Copy and complete each sentence with the past tense of the irregular verb in brackets.

  1. Ethan ___ late that morning. (sleep)
  2. Ria _____ her new book yesterday. (get)
  3. Harry ______ me waiting for an hour. (keep)
  4. Mary ________ about her topic for the report before the class last week. (think)
  5. My cat just _______ there while the mouse escaped. (sit)
  6. I had __________ too much for the game at the shopping centre. (pay)
  7. Akira ________ the art prize last year. (win)
  8. Jessica ________ success to our athletics team last season. (bring)
  9. I _________ this cold last week. (catch)
  10. Mary had __________ the homework before I arrived. (begin)

Write out the irregular past tense of the following verbs:

lose-

sing-

leave-

drink –

feel –

say –

draw –

write –

be –

buy –

Green and Yellow

To show that something happened in the past the verb changes in a sentence. Usually we add ‘ed’ to the verb.

BUT some verbs are irregular; we don’t add ‘ed’ and the spelling changes.

———————————————————————————————–

Use the irregular past tense verbs in the word box to change the verb in the sentences below. Rewrite the sentence correctly using the irregular past tense verb.

It’s Your Turn…

Red & Blue

Here is a piece of text about different rivers of the world. Can you copy and organise the text into paragraphs?

The Nile is longest river in the world. It is 4132 miles (6650 km) long – that’s nearly seven times the distance from John o’ Groats at the top of Scotland to Land’s End at the bottom of England! When most people think of The Nile they think of Egypt, but surprisingly, only 20% of the river is in Egypt, it also flows through countries including Uganda and Ethiopia before ending at the Mediterranean Sea. The Rhine flows through Germany and is 766 miles (1233km) long. It also travels through another five countries before reaching the North Sea in the Netherlands. Its source is a small stream coming from a glacier in the Swiss Alps (the mountains in Switzerland). The Danube is the second largest river in Europe. It is 1785 miles (2680 km) long and its source is in the Black Forest Mountains in Germany flowing to The Black Sea. This river flows through, or along the border of many different countries including Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania to name a few. It also flows through the capital cities of Belgrade, Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava.
