This week’s spelling words:
In Primary 4 we practise phonics and spelling everyday. Here are some useful materials we use to guide our lessons in class.
What is a phoneme?
Single phoneme – a single letter is used to create the sound.
Joined phoneme – more than one letter is used to create the sound, e.g. ai, ay
Split phoneme – where the letter e comes at the end of a word and changes the sound of the vowel, e.g. gate, rice
This is the order we use to teach phonemes.
Stage 1 and 2 – most learners have spent time on these phonemes although some may need revision.
In P4 we are currently working through Stage 3:
These posters are great reminders for the phonemes:
Spelling strategies
Common Words – vital for learners because being able to read and spell these words improves reading and writing ability.

P4 teachers expect learners to complete the following tasks in their homework jotters:
*Use the Look, Cover, Write and Check strategy 2 times to improve memory and independence.
*Sentence work: Use some of the homework words to write 3 quality sentences. Encourage use of capital letter and full stop/question mark/exclamation mark to mark sentences. In P4 we also work on using a variety of describing words to improve detail.
Active spelling tasks that can support learning at home in addition to the above set activities.
Or use dice to make it more interesting!
