Class Update

We have had a brilliant week in P1/2. Thank you so much to everyone who came to our Stay and Play session yesterday, you made our day!

This afternoon, we were treated to different activities planned and lead by our P6/7 buddies. We had a great time in the sunshine!

Here are some of our activities this week:

Our Stay and Play afternoon was great fun and all the children loved showing their parents or grandparents around. Thank you so much for a great time!

We had another great outdoor education session this week. We learned all about seeds and the animals that help spread the seeds. We also used the apples from our school garden to make our own apple juice. Most of us were brave and tried it. It was delicious!

No homework

Please note that I have not issued any homework this week.

We are all excited to welcome our parents/carers or family members to our classroom on Thursday at 2pm for our Stay and Play session.

Feel free to take your child home with you once you have finished looking around on Thursday but please see me in order to sign your child out before leaving.

I’m looking forward to seeing you then.

Class update

This week, we had visitors from Dean Castle who taught us about animal dens and nests, let us try to start a campfire, showed us how to deal with a call of nature when there is no toilet nearby, and taught us how to keep safe from midges. We had such a great time!

We also had a visit from our local community PC and from our Childsmile toothbrushing ladies.

In our activities time we worked hard on improving our maths and literacy skills this week. P1s continued to improve their number formation and counting to 5. They also learned their last sound for the first set of sounds and are now revising all of the first 6 sounds. We all continued to practise finding rhyming words and did loads of sound recognition games.

P2s practised their reading and comprehension. We also wrote sentences using common and tricky words. Our spelling sounds this week were oo and ee which we practised in different activities. Some of our literacy work also involved making CVC words.

We also painted our Christmas cards which you will be able to order after the September weekend 😂

I hope that everyone has a wonderful long weekend!

Homework for Tuesday 24th September

Primary 1

Literacy

This week we are going over all of the sounds that we have learned so far. Please play the game to practise identifying beginning sounds. Then ask your child to complete the worksheet in order to practise correct letter formation. Children should use a writing pencil rather than coloured pencil or crayons to do their writing.

Maths

We are practising our numbers to 5. Practise counting and writing the numbers to 5 by playing Today’s Number. Choose any of the numbers up to 5 or higher if your child is keen to work with bigger numbers.

Primary 2

Literacy

This week we are revising the <oo> and <ee> sounds. Please find the spelling words below. Choose a different activity from your spelling bingo this week. Don’t forget to colour the box that you have completed on the bingo sheet. Please practise your spelling words for our spell check next Tuesday.

I have given yesterday’s spell check jotters home with all P2s. Could parents please check the spell check and encourage their child to write any words (or sounds) they need to practise. I have set the jotter out for those that should be doing that work. Thank you!

Maths

This week we are learning to add 10 to a single digit number. This is an easy calculation that we will need to practise. If you want to practise at home, you can play Robot More or Less. You will need to choose “More than”, “up to 20” and specifically select “+10” to practise this particular skill.

Class Update

We have done lots of work across the curriculum this week.

in Literacy, P1s learned a new sound (i) and practised the sounds they already know. All of us have been learning about rhyming words and we have been practising lots of rhymes together. P2s have been practising their spelling words and revising <ng> and <wh>.

In maths, P1s have been practising their counting and number formation. P2s have been revising addition to 10 and we’ve tackled some harder sums to 20.

We have started our 5 senses topic and have made a colour wheel which we will use next week to explore our sense of sight out in the school garden. We can’t wait to learn more about our 5 senses!

Number Recognition and Counting Game

Here is another fun game that you can play at home to practise counting and recognising numbers.

You can just use a sheet of paper and write numbers 1-6 all over it. You will also need a die and two sets of counters (or anything else to cover the numbers with). Your child will roll the die, count (or recognise) the number of dots and then cover that number on the sheet of paper. Take it in turns to do that until all numbers have been covered. The person with the most counters on the sheet is the winner.

This game can also be played with higher numbers. You may want to use a D10 or D20 die or you can make simple flashcards with dots or numbers to 20 that you mix up and put in a pile face down. Instead of rolling a die, players simply turn over the top card and find that number.

Homework for Monday 16th September

Primary 1

Literacy

Let’s go on a sound hunt this week. So far, we have learned the sounds   s  /   a   /   t   /   p    and    i  .

Children should find 3 things around the house and garden that start with each of these sounds? <i> may be a bit tricky, don’t worry if you can’t find 3 items that start with that sound. You could also have a look around when you go for a walk or a drive.

Ask your child to draw the 3 items on the homework sheet. An adult could add the word below the picture. Please return the completed sheet in the wee homework pack on Monday.

Maths

We will be practising to write and count 4 and 5 this week. Children could be challenged to find 4 or 5 different items around the house. Count the items with them to give your child lots of practise of counting.

A good online game to practise sequencing numbers to 10 is Caterpillar Ordering. Choose “Sequencing” and “1-10”.

Primary 2

Literacy

All P2s have received a homework folder.

Please keep this homework folder at home with you. It will help you to do your spelling homework this year. You have a “whiteboard” with a blank side as well as a lined side in it. At the bottom of the lined side, you have lines to practise your spell checks which we will do every Monday in class. Choose one spelling activity from the spelling bingo grid each week to help you practise your spelling words. You can of course do more than one, but please only colour one activity in your bingo grid each week.

This week we are revising <ng> and <wh>. Please practise the following words:

ring                      whip

song                      whisk

long                      when

sting

thing

sing

bring

Maths

We have started to practise adding within 20. A good game to practise this with on the ipad or a phone is Robot Addition. Choose “up to 15” and encourage your child to use the number line at the bottom to help their calculations. Children could also “put the number in their pocket” and count on.
