Homework for Monday 3rd March

I’m so sorry for the late homework post. We have been practising our spelling words in class so this will hopefully not be too much of an issue.

Primary 1

We are revising our last group of letters this week and our word list reflects our work in class. Please practise writing and reading your words as usual.

In maths, we are looking at number facts for 10. I have given you an envelope with number and picture cards as well as an overview of games that you can play with the cards to memorise number facts for 10.

Primary 2

We are continuing to explore the ‘magic e’, this week we are looking at <o_e>. Here are our words:

In maths, we have been skip counting in 2s (to identify odd and even numbers), 3s, 4s and 5s. We are also looking at rounding numbers to the nearest 10. You could always practise this at home with your child. For rounding, we round down when a number ends in 1, 2, 3, and 4. We round up when a number ends in 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.

Homework for Monday 24th February

Primary 1

This week we are practising words that contain the letters y and z. We have been busy practising these sounds throughout last week and are now ready to use them in our CVC words.

In maths, we are looking at the story of 10 this week. It is very important that children know their number bonds of 10 and can recall them quickly. This will help their mental arithmetic in future years when we calculate with larger numbers. Quiz your child about the `”friendly numbers”, e.g. 6 and 4 or 2 and 8 etc.

Primary 2

This week we are looking at our first magic e phoneme. We are practising <i_e>.

Here are this week’s spelling words:

In maths, we are looking at ordering numbers to 100 from largest to smallest and vice versa. You can practise this by playing the caterpillar game.

Class Update week ending 14th February

It has been a busy few weeks in our P1/2 classroom. We have been busy learning new sounds, more difficult phonemes, lots of adding, working with numbers to 100 and learning about food and farming.

We really enjoyed performing our Scottish song and poem on our Burns day celebration. We loved the Irn Bru and shortbread, too. Thank you to everyone who came to see us.

We loved having mums, dads and family in to work with us and see all of our amazing work this week. We loved showing off our new play area, too. We continued our activities on Friday, too.

We spent Friday afternoon with our buddies and enjoyed the cold but sunny weather outside.

Homework for Wednesday 12th February

Due to our long weekend, homework next week will be due on Wednesday. We will do our spell checks on that day, too.

Primary 1

This week we are learning the sounds y and x. Our spelling word list this week goes over words using the sounds v and j which we learned last week. Please practise spelling these words using magnetic letters, write them on your “whiteboard” and try to write a simple sentence remembering capital letters and full stops.

We are looking at addition facts for 8 and 9 this week. We have been using part-whole mats and counters to find different ways of making these numbers. This is something that you could practise at home, too. You could use cups or plates to make your part-whole model and counters, dry pasta shapes or coins. Try to find different ways of making numbers to 10.

Primary 2

We are learning about the phoneme <igh> this week. Our words are a bit tricky and we will need to practise them carefully for our spell check. We also have 2 common words in our word list this week.

In maths, Primary 2s are exploring partitioning numbers to 100 this week, e.g. 46 = 40 + 6. There are two online games you can play to practise this skill – click here for Game 1 and click here for Game 2.

Class update week ending 31/1/25

We have made so much progress in our learning this week, everyone has done an amazing job and we have all been doing our very best.

We have been doing lots of interactive work to practise our maths and literacy skills. We have been looking at doubling numbers, addition within 10 and 20, partitioning and place value to 100.

In literacy, we have been practising our spelling sounds and CVC words. We have been working hard to improve our sentence writing and letter formation. P1s have been learning the letters j and v this week.

Our P6/7 buddies organised some outdoor play activities for us this afternoon. It has been a while since we have had the chance to spend some time with them outdoors and we had a great time!

Homework for Monday 3rd February

Primary 1

We are focusing on our new sounds from last week for this week’s spelling words. Please use the magnetic letters to revise all sounds and to practise spelling the new words. Children are doing a great job of breaking down the words, counting how many sounds and then sounding the words out in order to write them. Well done!

Please check the word list jotters carefully as not all children have been given the same homeowork.

In addition, could you please play the board game that I have added to the homework folder to practise hearing initial sounds or writing CVC words. I have also included words that use this week’s sounds <j> and <v>.

Primary 2

This week’s phoneme is <oi>, mostly used at the beginning or in the middle of a word. Our tricky word this week is “walk”. As always, please choose an activity from the Bingo sheet and do a practice spell check before next Monday.

Here are this week’s words:

Class Update Week ending 24/1/25

Despite being cut short by Storm Eowyn, we have learned lots this week and developed our skills further. Here is what we have been up to:

Primary 1s have been working on their addition. We have been looking at different ways of making a number with a particular focus on the number 6.

We have been improving our gymnastics skills with the help of Primary 3/4 this week. It was great to share skills and ideas with them. Children have each other feedback and demonstrated different apparatus work to each other.

Primary 2s completed their instruction writing unit this week. Primary 1s focused on sequencing events and giving instructions verbally. We also worked on our spelling words and CVC words. We are focusing on letter formation and P1s are continuing to learn 2 sounds each week. This week we learned h and w.

We made Nessie headbands in preparation for our Burns Day which unfortunately was cancelled on Friday. However, we are looking forward to performing our poem and song at a later point for you.

We practised our cutting skills and used different materials to decorate Nessie.

Homework for Monday 27th January

Health Homework for everyone

Mrs Cunningham, who works with us on a Monday after lunch, is asking that children learn their home addresses and postcodes for their new health topic. Thank you!

Primary 1

Literacy

We are working on 2 new sounds this week. Today we learned “H h” and we will also be learning “W w” later this week. If possible, please practise writing these letters and chat about words beginning with these sounds.

Our spelling and reading words this week still focus on our block 2 letters and continue to help your child consolidate l, g, b, o, u and f. Please practise reading and writing these words with your child.

Numeracy

We have been working on doubles and near doubles. This can be quite tricky for your child but knowing their doubles to 10 will help greatly with their numeracy skills. Going over the double numbers every now and then will keep the facts in your child’s mind. Click here to go to a doubles song on YouTube.

Primary 2

Literacy

We are looking at <ou> this week and are comparing ow and ou words. Here are our spelling words for this week:

Numeracy

In maths, we are further looking at 100 squares. We are working on identifying numbers 1 and 2 more / less, as well as 10 more / less. We are also counting in 10s and 5s. These are areas that you can also practise at home using the online 100 square

Class Update week ending 17th January

We have had another busy and fun week in Primary 1/2. This week we focused on practising our single sounds and phonemes in Literacy, we did some sentence writing, P2s wrote instructions on how to brush your teeth and P1s practised their reading skills with new books.
In maths, P1s found different ways of making a number by adding and P2s explored 100 squares. We also consolidated patterns and shapes.
We learned a bit more about Scotland and Nessie as we are preparing for our Burns Day celebration next Friday.

We also had a visit from our recycling waste officers and learned all about recycling and waste management in East Ayrshire.

Here is some of our amazing work from this week.

Homework for Monday 20th January

Primary 1

Literacy – This week we are consolidating our most recent block of phonics: l b u f g and o. Please practise reading and writing the words from our word list. I have also added letter cards for a pairs game or simple matching game. You can also use the cards as flashcards to see if your child remembers all of the sounds.

Numeracy – In maths we have been looking at addition within 5 and will be moving on to adding within 10. We have been looking at how to make numbers in different ways and have been partitioning. This is something you could also practise at home. Use counters, coins or other items. Lay out a number, e.g. 5. Now divide the counters into 2 groups, e.g. 3 and 2. Talk about the calculation, e.g. 3 + 2 = 5 . Can you find other ways of making 5?

Primary 2

Literacy – This week we are looking at the <ow> sound like in owl. Please practise our words using your new Bingo sheet.

Our words are:  owl, how, now, cow, bow, down, town, crown, brown, your (tricky word).

Numeracy – Primary 2s have now started to look at numbers to 100. We are exploring 100 squares and counting in 10s, 5s and 2s. Click here to use the online 100 square to practise with your child.
