Number Recognition and Counting Game

Here is another fun game that you can play at home to practise counting and recognising numbers.

You can just use a sheet of paper and write numbers 1-6 all over it. You will also need a die and two sets of counters (or anything else to cover the numbers with). Your child will roll the die, count (or recognise) the number of dots and then cover that number on the sheet of paper. Take it in turns to do that until all numbers have been covered. The person with the most counters on the sheet is the winner.

This game can also be played with higher numbers. You may want to use a D10 or D20 die or you can make simple flashcards with dots or numbers to 20 that you mix up and put in a pile face down. Instead of rolling a die, players simply turn over the top card and find that number.

Counting Activity

At the moment, we are revising some of our maths skills that we have learned either in Primary 1 or in nursery. Here is an easy activity that you can do with your child at home, too.

Start by picking a number. Primary 1s can try numbers within 10 depending on their knowledge. You could also roll a die to decide on the number. Primary 2s should work with numbers to 20.

Now find the number that is 1 less than (or the number before) the one that your child has picked. Use pasta shapes, buttons, counters etc to count out that number. After that, do the same with the number 1 more than (or the number after).

This activity develops lots of skills including fine motor skills (you could use a pair of tongs to pick up the shapes but using fingers will be effective, too), counting and sequencing numbers.
