Term 1 Topic- Fairyland and Fairytales

This term our topic is Fairytales. We have been looking at traditional tales and covering some skills and knowledge linked to the books. The Fairyland Dragon has came for a visit and is keeping an eye on us and helping us as we enter Fairyland. The storybooks we have looked at are:

The Enormous Turnip– We learned about root vegetables and vegetables that are above and below ground. We also looked at how the water travels through plants and vegetables by putting celery into dyed water. The messy tuff tray allowed us to retell the story and made some turnip soup as a team- it was a huge success.

Little Red Riding Hood– We looked at good vs evil, created wanted posters for The Wolf and looked at artist Wassily Kandinsky to create a blanket for Granny.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears– So far, we have tried some coloured sematic writing and created beds and chairs for Baby Bear using Lego; we investigated at what happened when we put Gummy Bears in water and the science behind it; we tasted some sweet, salty and plain porridge; and we practiced Kandinsky’s concentric circles to create a patterned porridge bowl.

We have also been covering some literacy and comprehension skills including:

  • Sequencing
  • Spot the Mistake
  • True, False, Can’t Tell
  • Find it and Prove it questions

We have been working very hard with our literacy.

  • Some of us are working with Biff, Chip and Kipper books and some of us are doing Rocket Phonics for our reading skills.
  • We have been practicing our sounds with a mixture of worksheets, games and practical activities.
  • We have enjoyed some tuff tray activities such as fishing for words to encourage our reading and sounding out
