{"id":312,"date":"2020-07-08T09:40:59","date_gmt":"2020-07-08T09:40:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/numeracyandmathematics\/?p=312"},"modified":"2022-07-13T08:37:55","modified_gmt":"2022-07-13T08:37:55","slug":"key-concepts-in-numeracy-and-using-manipulatives-in-a-cpa-approach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/numeracyandmathematics\/2020\/07\/08\/key-concepts-in-numeracy-and-using-manipulatives-in-a-cpa-approach\/","title":{"rendered":"Introduction to Numicon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/public\/numeracyandmathematics\/uploads\/sites\/16806\/2020\/05\/18084232\/Publication11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"194\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Introduction to Numicon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Developing key concepts in number remains a focus within the East Ayrshire Numeracy and Mathematics Strategy.<br \/>\nDeveloping learners number sense is key to ensuring all learners can thrive within a rich numeracy and mathematics curriculum where learners have the opportunity to develop their conceptual understanding, procedural fluency and mathematical thinking.<br \/>\nAs we plan learning, teaching and assessment across key concepts in numeracy there are a number of strategies and approaches that can incorporated into teaching and learning which supports conceptual understanding, procedural fluency and develop mathematical thinking.\u00a0 An approach which has been shown to support learners in developing conceptual understanding is the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach.\u00a0 CPA is an approach to teaching that develops a deep and sustainable understanding of maths. If you do not have physical rods, then their <a href=\"https:\/\/nrich.maths.org\/4348\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cuisenaire Environment<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/mathsbot.com\/manipulatives\/rods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mathsbot Cuisenaire<\/a> will be a useful supplement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nrich.maths.org\/14502\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Visualising with Cuisenaire &#8211; Secondary<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although some teachers associate their use more with primary classrooms, Cuisenaire rods can be a powerful visualisation tool to help students of all ages solve problems about fractions, ratio and proportions. A Number Talk is a brief, ongoing, daily routine that helps students develop computational fluency through the opportunity to share their thinking processes to solve a mathematical problem aloud.
