Teaching Fractions, Decimals and Percentages – Part 1

Teaching fractions, decimal fractions and percentages is perceived to be difficult to do well and for learners fractions, decimal fractions and percentages are commonly found to be difficult for them to learn.  This series of videos looks at how the development of fraction sense can be incorporated into maths lessons and how this conceptual understanding of fractions can be developed to improve learners understanding of fractional relationships.

The first part of the series looks at the 6 Big Ideas that underpin understanding of fractional relationships and how particular materials and visuals can support understanding.  The second part looks at how links and connections can be made to connect fractions, decimal fractions and percentages.  A glow login will be required to access the materials.

The site provides information and support for Numeracy and Mathematics, access to resources for learning, teaching and assessment in Numeracy and Mathematics and professional learning resources and links to relevant research

Education Scotland – Numeracy and Mathematics PLC

Education Scotland have also updated the Professional Learning Resource.  The resource supports learning, teaching and assessment across the BGE.  The resource focusses on Number and Number Processes, Fractions, Decimals and Percentages, Time, Ideas of Chance and Uncertainty and Data Analysis.  The documents can be accessed through the following link:

Raising Attainment in Numeracy programme 2023-24

East Ayrshire’s ‘Raising Attainment in Numeracy’ programme 2023-24

All of the SAC funded numeracy training has been adapted and recorded as webinars and is available through this East Ayrshire Numeracy and Maths Blog here:

Early Level Training

First Level Training

Second Level Training

There are currently 25 webinars, 8 themed sessions for each level (9 for Second Level) listed above with associated links to training materials, resources, links and sources of inspiration. It is the engagement in the webinars, training packs, resources, links and sources of inspiration that provides practitioners with support in developing teaching and learning across these themes.

The format of the training below provides a possible structure for Teacher Learning Communities (TLCs) within individual establishments. This can be adapted to link with improvement priorities in individual establishments.

To access the recordings and resources participants must join the East Ayrshire Raising Attainment in Numeracy Training MS Team.

 Training Outline 2023-24

Welcome

Welcome to the East Ayrshire Numeracy and Mathematics site.

The East Ayrshire numeracy and mathematics strategy aims to:

  • ensure that all learners develop the numeracy and mathematics skills required to be successful in all areas of life, learning and work
  • raise attainment and close the poverty related attainment gap in relation to numeracy and mathematics.

This site has been created to support all practitioners in meeting these aims within the East Ayrshire numeracy and mathematics strategy.

Classroom Assistant Training

The SAC Attainment Improvement Mentors (AIMs) have developed and delivered training sessions for Classroom Assistants throughout session 2019-20.  These sessions have focussed on supporting learners and interventions in relation to literacy and numeracy.

The AIMs team have created a series of training videos and resources linked to these sessions.  The following training videos and resources can be used by Classroom Assistants as a reference point or as a way of accessing the key messages delivered through the face-to-face inputs.  Session 1  will look at supporting literacy with session 2 focussing on supporting numeracy.  There is also guidance on how to use the East Ayrshire Numeracy Assessment Tool.

Session 3 – Supporting Numeracy across the Broad General Education Levels

The following training has been developed following feedback from training delivered in session 2.  This series of training for Classroom Assistants provides a specific focus on supporting children to develop key concepts in numeracy, the use of concrete manipulatives and pictorial representations to support understanding in numeracy and how the development of mathematical language improves understanding of numeracy and mathematics.

Session 3a – Supporting Early Level Numeracy

This presentation explores the use of mathematical language, concrete materials and supporting numeracy within Early Level with the use of concrete materials.

Counting Activities

Addition and Subtraction Activities

Pattern Activities

Information Handling Activities

Fractions Activities

Session 3b – Supporting First Level Place Value and Addition and Subtraction

This presentation covers place value and addition and subtraction at First Level and includes the correct use of mathematical language and key concepts and skills. It gives a detailed look at all addition and subtraction strategies and how concrete materials can be used to support pupils learning.

Place Value Activities – First Level

Addition and Subtraction Activities – First Level

Session 3c – Supporting First Level Multiplication, Division and Fractions

This presentation looks at the use of mathematical language, effective thinking questions and how the concrete manipulatives available within your school can be used to support our young peoples learning.

Multiplication and Division Activities – First and Second Level

Session 3d – Supporting Second Level Numeracy

This presentation explores how we can use concrete materials to support our young people. It gives examples of the Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract (CPA) approach at this level and the use of mathematical language to support learning.
