Our 2023/24 progress:
School Ground Audits
Our Clean Green Natural Environment Team have worked with our school Janitor to audit the school grounds and raise awareness to all classes when standards appear to slip.
‘Mucky Pup, Clean It Up’
Some of our ‘Poo bag caddies’ from last year are still visible round the village. These have been topped up. Next session, we aim to roll these out to more areas in the village where we are finding dog mess to be more prevalent during our NC Path Warrior missions.
‘Young Environmentalists’ Club
Supported by Paddy from EA Leisure, Mr Burns ran a successful ‘Young Environmentalists’ afterschool club with a regular group of 10 attendees each week.
Growing our own produce
Through a successful funding bid, we were able to get planters built for our school courtyard areas. We have successfully applied to Tesco Stronger Starts Grants, with the aim of using the funding to create new living and growing spaces within our school grounds, creating a safe hub for nature and growing our own food produce. The NC Gardening Group have agreed to support us when we are at the planting stage. We are in discussion with NCDT about how we can work together to promote meals within the Clean Green Cookbook, creating a ‘Go Fresh’ type meal system using the produce we grow in our school garden. We aim to work with our parents to upskill their cooking skills through this approach too.
Litter Picker of the Week
Each class has taken responsibility of allocating a ‘Litter Picker of the Week’ who carries out their duties in the playground and has the power to award house points for peers who they note as being responsible. Our Tidy Friday rota continues with each class taking responsibility at the end of a Friday lunchtime each week to pick litter in the playground.
NC Path Warriors
We have started our NC Path Warrior journey, an EA Leisure Path Warden Scheme. By tending to various routes in our village and clearing them of litter, we are ensuring they are safe and attractive to walk along. The data gathered on these walks is shared with EA Leisure and hopefully when path routes are revisited later, we see improvements.
Sustainable Development Goals
We are still to address Sustainable Development Goals across the school. This will be a priority next session.
Next steps:
To locate more ‘dog poo caddies’ around New Cumnock. To grow our own produce in our new planters to make soup. To continue to act as NC Path Warriors, in partnership with EA Leisure, to monitor and maintain the paths in our village. To introduce Sustainable Development Goals across the school.
