PARENT & CARER WEEKLY UPDATE (24/25-25)

S4-S6 LEAVERS’ ATTAINMENT & DESTINATIONS
This week Scottish Government released the February update of Insight, a tool used by schools to measure performance. I am delighted to share positives in our overall trends for students who left Loudoun Academy in 2024, with 95.03% entering into a positive post-school destination, and above comparator trends for the middle-60% and highest-20% attaining as well as overall literacy and numeracy at SCQF level 4, 5 and 6.

Our School Improvement Plan highlights actions to address to support improved attainment of key groups, including the lowest-20% attaining and those students who leave at the earliest point in their school career in S4 and for some, in S5. More information on the School Improvement Plan can be found on the School Website: https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/ea/loudounacademy2022/school-improvement-plan/

PARENT COUNCIL MEETING

The next meeting of the Parent Council will be Thursday 6 March 2025, from 7.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. in the Conference Room. Any parents and carers of students at Loudoun Academy are welcome to attend.

ROTARY CLUB YOUNG MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR

We will host our Rotary Club Young Musician of the Year event on. Tuesday 11 March 2025 in Barista, between 7.00 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. This is always a really enjoyable night and we look forwards to welcoming our guests from Rotary Club and our parents, carers and families along. Hope you can make it.

SCHOOL CODE – BE RESPECTFUL
Over the week we will be highlighting the following area of our School Code for ‘Be Respectful’:

Keep our school property clean and looked after

REWARDS ACTIVITY

Just a quick note to let you know about our plans, led by a team of staff in the school, for expanding our Rewards Activity at the end of this term. This will be for students who have shown very good attendance and engagement in school, with no cause for concern in behaviour through referrals or demerits through a wider choice of activity and involving S1-S4 students. The team are also looking ahead to next term, culminating in multi-activity trips in the Summer.

Best wishes

PARENT & CARER WEEKLY UPDATE (24/25-24)

SENIOR PHASE FULL REPORTS

We issued Full Reports for our S4 students today, which give information on current levels of progress and teacher comments on strengths and next steps. Any student who does not have this should see their Principal Teacher of Pupil Support or Principal Teacher of Communication Centre. We hope to be able to issue S5/6 Reports on Friday 28 February 2025.

SQA EXAMINATION DIET

SQA recently published a change to the planned Examination Diet for 2025. This means that our Senior Phase students in S4-6 will now start study leave on Thursday 24 April 2025. The updated Examination Timetable can be found using the following link: https://www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/files_ccc/nq-2025-exam-timetable.pdf

S4/5 OPTION CHOICE

A quick reminder that all S4 and S5 students must complete and return their Option Choice for S5/6 to their Principal Teacher of Pupil Support or Principal Teacher of Communication Centre, no later than Thursday 27 February 2025.

SCHOOL CALENDAR

An updated copy of the School Calendar for parents and carers can be found in the attachment. The main changes include our Young Musician of the Year Event, change to the Exam Diet, S6 prom and a reschedule to our Awards Ceremonies.

SCHOOL CODE – BE READY

As you know, since the beginning of the term we have been highlighting areas within our School Code for ‘Be Ready’. These expectations are to:

  • Be on time to class
  • Have everything you need (uniform/materials/kit)
  • Have your homework completed
  • Put your mobile and other devices off and away
  • Stay in the class during the lesson

We really appreciate parents and carers in understanding the importance of how these help to create an orderly, purposeful learning environment where all young people can learn and achieve well and supporting their child to follow these expectations.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

I would wish to thank young people, parents and carers for your ongoing support of our School Uniform this academic session, which generally has been strong. However, we have noticed a recent deterioration and will refocus on this from next week onwards. A reminder on acceptable dress for school can be found on our School Website:

https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/ea/loudounacademy2022/school-uniform/

Tracksuits, jogging bottoms, patterned or coloured leggings, shorts, crop tops, sports clothing, designer clothing, jeans or denim and fashion jackets or having no identifiable item of Loudoun Academy School Uniform are not acceptable. We will make daily contact with parents and carers where there are issues. Your ongoing support is greatly appreciated.

Best wishes

S4/S5 OPTION CHOICE PROCESS

Last week we had a great turnout for our S4/S5 Curriculum Information evening, to support students Option Choice for S5/S6. The slide presentations and option choice form can be found on our School Website using the following link.

https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/ea/loudounacademy2022/option-choice-process/

We have extended the deadline for return to Thursday 27 February 2025 to ensure all students are fully supported through the process.

ANTI BULLYING POLICY

As you may know, based on student and parent and carer feedback, we have developed our Anti-Bullying Policy as a school over the last Academic Session, with a full launch with students earlier this year during Anti-Bullying Week. Mrs Egerton, Depute Head Teacher has provided a summary for parents and carers, attached. I hope you find this helpful information on this vital area of our work.

MENTORS IN VIOLENCE PREVENTION

Led by Mr Patterson, Principal Teacher of Pupil Support, our senior students were recently trained up to deliver lessons to younger pupils in Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) using this national approach. It aims to help young people to identify harmful, abusive or bullying behaviours and to be equipped with the skills to respond safely, protecting themselves and others. Well done to our Senior pupils who have done an excellent job and to our S1-S3 students for their great response to the programme.

YOU, ME, TOGETHER

Recently, Loudoun Academy was a pilot for a new Police Scotland Resource for education, You, Me, Together where our S6 students explored issues around domestic abuse and the wider issue of violence against women and girls. You can hear more about this in a short video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mY9zLh44_k

RAPE CRISIS NATIONAL PREVENTION PROGRAMME

In the next few weeks we will be also working with our partners at the STAR Centre in Kilmarnock who will work with our S3 students in PSHE on workshops from trained practitioners linked to ‘consent’ . The programme has been evaluated to be highly effective in improving young people’s knowledge and attitudes in relation to sexual violence.

The programme supports young people to develop positive attitudes, knowledge, skills and behaviours using a range of interactive materials that look at key issues like gender stereotypes, the influence of media, how to access support, and the law. This is done in a way which is linked to the health and wellbeing curriculum, relevant to students’ age and stage.

SCHOOL CODE – READY
Over the week we will be highlighting the following area of our School Code for ‘Ready’:

Stay in class during the lesson

PARENT & CARER WEEKLY UPDATE (24/25-22)

REPAIR WORKS

Works will begin on Monday 10 February 2025 for approximately six weeks to repair the roof of the Assembly Hall which was significantly damaged in the recent storm. As this will involve scaffolding and fencing, we will ask young people if staying outside to be well clear and to stay at either the front of the building or the central quadrangle. Once the roof work is completed, we will expect to have further repair work undertaken on the Assembly Hall flooring.

PATHWAYS TO CAREERS
Over 50 employers from across Ayrshire will attend an upcoming event for learners in S3 to S6 and their parents and carers to find out about pathways to careers. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn first hand about future employment routes, apprenticeships and accredited training programmes which tie in with future career aspirations. We will also have a representative from the school in attendance also.

The event takes place at Ayrshire College, Kilmarnock Campus on Wednesday 19 February 2025 from 5.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m., with exclusive access to young people with additional support needs from 5.00 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. Sign up is required through following link: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/developing-the-young-workforce-ayrshire/pathways-to-careers/2025-02-19/17:30/t-yaxqepo.

DUKE OF EDINBURUGH
This week we had a really well attended showcase and presentation ceremony for our young people who achieved Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. It was a very proud moment for the young people, their families and also for us as a school to recognize their collective commitment to hundreds of hours of the physical, skills and volunteering sections of the programme, as well as training and expedition. We were also inspired by former pupils Andrew and Matthew who talked about their ‘Journey to Gold’. Huge thanks to Mr Blackhurst, Teacher of Mathematics for leading the group and organising the evening, and Mrs Dunlop, our Swimming Instructor for her absolutely outstanding work in ensuring the success of Duke of Edinburgh at Loudoun Academy. Linda McAulay-Griffiths, Chief Education Officer and Head of Education presented young people with their awards, and we were grateful to welcome Tim McArthur formerly of Duke of Edinburgh Scotland, and Willie White, Education Officer for East Ayrshire Council as invited guests.

SKI TRIP
I wanted to say a massive ‘well done’ to our 42 young people who returned on Sunday from a week skiing in Val di Fieme, Italy. As well as hearing of how everyone did on the piste, by all accounts the group have to be commended for their brilliant conduct throughout. The staff team could not speak highly enough of our students on return. Well done – one very proud Head Teacher!

Huge thanks to the staff team for their commitment to the trip – particularly Mrs Phillips – Acting Principal Teacher of Home Economics and Physical Education, who organised and led the group whilst still on her maternity leave. Mr Malakoty – Acting Principal Teacher of Art & Design, Mr McQuade – Acting Principal Teacher of Home Economics & Physical Education, Mr Vickers – Principal Teacher of Pupil Support, Miss Hutton – Teacher of Physical Education and Mrs Dunlop – thanks to all for your invaluable support to our students on the trip.

And just as one ski trip is over, next year’s trip opened for interest for January 2026. Students should speak to a member of the PE department – letter attached – to register their interest, no later than 28 February 2025.

2026 Ski Trip Inital Letter (002)

TESCO GALSTON TOKENS
You may know that Tesco in Galston have a Stronger Starts Campaign (better known as the ‘blue tokens’) that allocates money to the bid with the most tokens at the end of the 12 weeks. Miss Ross, Teacher of Physical Education currently has a bid in place at the moment to raise funds for kit for the Girls Football team. If you are in the store, please help by putting some tokens in our box – it would be hugely appreciated.

NETBALL & BASKETBALL SUCCESS
Well done to our Senior Basketball Team who beat St Ninians, East Renfrewshire this week in the West of Scotland final, now progressing to the Scottish quarter finals in top seed to play Queensferry at home – well done to Lincoln who was player of the game. Congratulations also to our senior Netball team who played with real energy and drive, beating Kyle Academy at an away fixture. It is great to see our sporting teams thriving and growing from strength to strength.

SOMEWHERE TO STAY
This week we also welcomed a guest team of artists to work with our S2/3 students on art and poetry exploring stories of forced migration and the experience of refugees. The sessions were really thought provoking and engaging, and I know that our students really valued the input from the team who joined us. The work was linked to a current exhibition at the Dick Institute in Kilmarnock called ‘Somewhere to Stay’.

Over the next fortnight we will be highlighting the following area of our School Code for ‘Ready’:

Despite their opponents’ initial lead, the team fought hard to regain with a strong penalty taken by Lyle and an equaliser goal from Jack, followed by two further strikes from Lyle and success secured by a debut goal from Sam. Solid teamworking and an excellent 5-4 final score, with great performance all round. Well done!

DETERMINATION – QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” —Lao Tzu

PARENT & CARER WEEKLY UPDATE (24/25-18)

SENIOR PHASE ASSESSMENT DIET

The Senior Phase Assessment Diet (prelims) begin next week for two weeks, with students receiving all necessary information at Assemblies led by Mr Hendry, Depute Head Teacher – copies of these slides are on the Safer Scotland Schools App. All students should have personalised exam timetables, and should otherwise attend normal classes. Best of luck to all our young people at this critical stage.

HEAD TEACHER ASSEMBLIES

This week I met with all year groups to explore our School Value of ‘Determination’. I spoke about how our society often misrepresents ‘success’ based on it being either instant or based on talent alone. I encouraged young people to ‘believe to achieve’, set ambitious but realistic targets, and to persevere in the face of challenge. The Assembly considered how we use feedback to help us to improve. The most talked about reference afterwards was my reference to the ‘inner Gremlin’, the voice we all have which tells us we can’t do something, particularly under pressure, and how to address this. We will develop our focus on the School Value of ‘Determination’ throughout the course of this term.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

A very brief reminder that all students must be smartly dressed for school. There are a range of flexible options including school badged polo/sweatshirt/hoodie, black or white school shirt and tie and blazer with black trousers, plain black leggings or black skirt with black tights. Designer and branded clothing, non-school branded hoodies, crop tops, tracksuits, sports tops and other items which have no identifiable school uniform are not permitted. Almost all young people are returning to the new term showing high standards and we will begin again uniform checks for each year group next week onwards, addressing any concerns home on a daily basis. Thanks for our ongoing support – it does make a difference.

IMMUNISATION LETTERS

Letters will shortly be provided via the school from NHS Ayrshire & Arran for pupils who missed the Human Pampillomavirus (HPV) immunisation programme. All students who have still to get the jag will get a letter and I would be grateful if all parents and carers involved could return the consent form, even if they do not wish their child to receive the vaccination.
