Modern Languages

In the faculty of Modern Languages and RME, pupils have the opportunity to study a wide range of subjects at a variety of levels.
Within the Modern Languages department, pupils in S1 study two periods of French and one period of Mandarin delivered by our Mandarin teacher, Miss Wei. Pupils in S2-S3 study French for three periods a week and in S3 are given the option to study Spanish also. In the Senior Phrase we offer French at National 4, National 5 and Higher level and we also offer Higher Spanish. Pupils in S5/S6 can opt out of PE and instead study an elective in Spanish or Mandarin.
There are lots of exciting opportunities for pupils studying Modern Languages including trips, extra-curricular activities, lunch time clubs and even trips abroad. Last year we took pupils out of school to attend events such as the Language Show Live at the SECC, a languages motivational event where pupils attended various workshops and had the opportunity to speak to businsesses that recruit people with language skills and various Chinese events including a Chinese New Year celebration.
We have three lunchtime clubs, Word Wizard club on a Monday with Miss O’Rourke where pupils imporve their spelling and literacy skills all while preparing for a prestigious national spelling semi-final held in March at the University of Strathclyde. Pupils who reach the final compete in the nationally again at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. Our Mandarin club for S1-S3 is on a Tuesday lunchtime with Miss Wang and the S3 Spanish club is taken by Mrs Costello on Wednesday lunchtimes.
Pupils studying Mandarin this year in S5 will have the opportunity to put themselves forward for a 17 day trip to China during the summer holidays. Last year, Martine Forbes and Kimberly Chow represented Loudoun on the trip and had a wonderful experience! Details of next year’s trip will be available early 2017.

Within the RME department, pupils in S1-S4 study RME 1 period a week. Our pupils in S3 and S4 this year are pursuing the Religious, Beliefs and Values unit which will see them accredited by the SQA. In the Senior Phase we offer National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher RMPS.
Our RME teacher Mr Wotherspoon runs a lunchtime club on a Wednesday for S1-S3 pupils. The Christian Café, as our pupils decided to name it, is well attended by pupils interested in religion and world issues. Recently the group have been putting together shoeboxes for the Blythwood Care shoebox appeal. Our S4 classes also contriubted items for the shoeboxes and around 14 shoeboxes will be donated.
