WEDNESDAY MORNING CHALLENGE

Good morning P4/5!   Today is World Maths Day.  Since Pythagoreans created the word “mathematics” in the 6th century BC, numbers have been a beneficial and challenging part of life.

Whether the actual crunching of numbers sounds exciting or repulsive, celebrating World Maths Day can be oodles and oodles of fun! Math is believed by many people to be one of the hardest subjects to achieve because of its strictness in needing correct answers, its abstract concepts, and the overall stress involved in succeeding. But don’t let that be intimidating!

Pablo Picasso is known for using polygons in his artwork to depict scenes or people. Leonardo DiVinci used linear perspective (including parallel lines, vanishing point and horizon line) to create depth on a surface that was flat. And M. C. Escher created fascinating combinations of 3-dimensional illusions using hyperbolic geometry and tessellations in his black-and-white drawings.

TUESDAY MORNING CHALLENGE

SPELLING HOMEWORK

Ring ring! Hello? Who’s there?

Let’s take a moment to honour this master inventor of the telephone in 1876, and other innovations on Alexander Graham Bell Day!

Born in Scotland in 1847, Bell was educated in the UK and then  moved to North America in his early 20s. From an early age, Bell was interested and curious about the world around him. By the age of 12 he had invented a dehusking machine that his friend’s family used at their flour mill for many years.

To celebrate this day you could make your own plastic cup or tin can telephone joined by a piece of string.  Pull the string tight to listen to the ‘caller’ speak from a distance.

Look at a few of the previous designs of the telephone.  None of these have a camera or can connect to the internet.  Design your own telephone of the future.

Good morning P4/5!

I hope you have had a good weekend.

MONDAY MORNING CHALLENGE

Today is Oreo Cookie Day.  The sandwich cookie is made up of two chocolate disks containing a sweet cream filling and is loved by millions.  The biscuit was first developed and produced in 1912 a factory in New York City. Today, the block on which the factory was located is known as “Oreo Way.”

Q. How many different ways are there to eat an Oreo?
A. You’re only limited by your imagination. Here’s a few ideas:

  • Twist them apart, eat the cream centre, and put them back together.
  • Eat the cookie side first, and the cookie and cream side last
  • Eat them whole, with milk but no dunking
  • Eat them whole dunking in milk all the way
