\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Drongan have taken an existing teaching theme and used the framework provided by the\u00a0 Heritage Detective Award as an opportunity to\u00a0 build on existing good work and further enhance practice.<\/p>\n<p>The school were introduced to the HH Awards as part of East Ayrshire&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/learningoutdoorssupportteam\/curriculum-outdoors-attainment-challenge-coach\/\">Curriculum Outdoors Attainment Challenge (COACh) <\/a>input.\u00a0 Much of the learning and teaching therefore takes place outdoors.\u00a0 Learners are able to visit artefacts, local monuments and buildings and quickly realise that the &#8216;story of our village&#8217; \/><\/p>\n<p>Classes use the Award outline as a planning tool and populate floor book pages with ideas for topics to explore and possible tools and sources of information to help them.\u00a0 Pupil led learning ensures that each time the award is revisited (successive P4\/5 classes have completed awards) the work is unique to that class.\u00a0 It is not a rigid programme of work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Investigate and Engage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Drongan is a former mining village.\u00a0 While exploring this rich heritage, pupils have been able to draw on family and community knowledge, maps past and present and investigations of sites and buildings walking distance from the school gate.\u00a0 Pupils have engaged in learning across all curricular areas &#8211; Social Studies, Literacy, Numeracy, RME, Expressive Arts, Health and Well Being in particular.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, adults and children are using their own questions to lead their investigations.\u00a0 In the process, they are developing the attributes essential to the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/education.gov.scot\/education-scotland\/scottish-education-system\/policy-for-scottish-education\/policy-drivers\/cfe-building-from-the-statement-appendix-incl-btc1-5\/the-purpose-of-the-curriculum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Four Capacities in Scottish Education. \u00a0 <\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Inspire<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One Award was completed during a period when parents and families could not come into school due to Covid restrictions.\u00a0 In order to fulfil the Heritage Hero <em>Inspire<\/em> element, pupils made a film\u00a0 and shared this with community.\u00a0 It shows the variety of sources used (maps, parish records, photographs), family stories and pupils&#8217; own investigations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yxG3vhTvt94&amp;t=11s&amp;ab_channel=NancyBrown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Drongan Primary School &#8211; Heritage Hero Presentation<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Recording and Evidencing Learning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Classroom displays and floor books are used to plan, investigate, engage, inspire and reflect on learning.\u00a0 One example of the work produced is shared in this <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/public\/learningoutdoorssupportteam\/uploads\/sites\/11891\/2021\/11\/29105303\/Record-of-Activities-1.pdf\">Record of Activities<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Heritage Hero Award and work towards it has proved immensely popular with both pupils and the wider community.\u00a0 The Award will continue to be used as the springboard for further investigations into the history of Drongan and the community that lives
