{"id":7336,"date":"2021-03-22T14:51:39","date_gmt":"2021-03-22T14:51:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/learningoutdoorssupportteam\/?page_id=7336"},"modified":"2023-02-01T14:38:58","modified_gmt":"2023-02-01T14:38:58","slug":"follow-up-activities-and-caring-for-your-trees","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/learningoutdoorssupportteam\/follow-up-activities-and-caring-for-your-trees\/","title":{"rendered":"Follow Up Activities and Caring for Your Trees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Once your trees have been planted, they will need your care and attention!<\/p>\n<div>Your trees will become a resource that the whole school community can enjoy.\u00a0 There are few things you can do to show the community how much we should value the woodland:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">1.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Give your wooded area a name.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\"><strong>2.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Let everyone know why the trees were planted.\u00a0 <\/strong>Create a p<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">oster<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, poem or\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">picture which can be used to explain why we\u2019re planting trees.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0(<\/span>Please send photographs to us so we can\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0let everyone else in EAC know about your good work!)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-US\"><strong>Create a Tree Charter.\u00a0 <\/strong>A tree charter will help everyone in the school community understand how to take care of and protect your new\u00a0 w<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">oodland.\u00a0 <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodlandtrust.org.uk\/support-us\/act\/tree-charter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Woodland Trust &#8211; Tree Charter <\/a><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">is an example of what a Tree Charter can look like. However, a pupil created and agreed charter will be much more effective.<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Below are some suggestions to help you give your trees the best possible start and in the process you will learn more about living things and their needs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The first activity comes from the RHS. <a href=\"https:\/\/schoolgardening.rhs.org.uk\/resources\/activity\/fun-cane-toppers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Make Fun Cane Toppers<\/a>\u00a0shows you how to make toppers for your cane supports.\u00a0 <strong>The canes are working to help your tree but cane toppers will help protect you.<\/strong>\u00a0 Turn this into a Technologies challenge &#8211; &#8216;What improvements could you make to the design to make sure that the toppers stay on the canes?&#8217;\u00a0 &#8216;What materials make the best, longest lasting cane toppers?&#8217;\u00a0 <em>CfE TCH 1-10a and TCH 2 -10a.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>OWL Scotland Scotland Network have produced a booklet of\u00a0 activities from across the curriculum to support your understanding and appreciation of trees. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/public\/learningoutdoorssupportteam\/uploads\/sites\/11891\/2021\/03\/22150021\/Summer_text_stages_12.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OWL Scotland Tree Booklet<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The booklet <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/public\/learningoutdoorssupportteam\/uploads\/sites\/11891\/2021\/03\/22150313\/TreeMeasuring2018.web3_.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tree Measuring<\/a> ,also from OWL Scotland, provides tree measuring activities suitable for learners working from Early Level and up.\u00a0 Monitor the progress of your new trees and investigate established trees whether in your school grounds or further afield.<\/p>\n<p>Lindsay, our partner from TCV Green Gym, has created some activities to help you think about the special jobs that trees do for us and what makes them so important. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/public\/learningoutdoorssupportteam\/uploads\/sites\/11891\/2021\/03\/22144637\/TCV-Green-Gym-Why-are-trees-so-important_-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TCV Green Gym &#8211; Why are trees so important?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Learn about trees through stories about the different species commonly found in Scotland.\u00a0 There is a story for every month of the year in\u00a0 <em>Tree Stories <\/em>which can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/owlscotland.org\/find-a-resource\/\">OWL Scotland Resources <\/a>\u00a0pages.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Once your trees have been planted, they will need your care and attention!
