{"id":4354,"date":"2020-06-02T11:04:01","date_gmt":"2020-06-02T11:04:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/learningoutdoorssupportteam\/?page_id=4354"},"modified":"2021-02-05T11:42:12","modified_gmt":"2021-02-05T11:42:12","slug":"the-woo-in-the-wild-woods-literacy-activities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/learningoutdoorssupportteam\/the-woo-in-the-wild-woods-literacy-activities\/","title":{"rendered":"The Woo in the Wild Woods Literacy Activities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Working with colleagues, we have found that both Early and First Level readers have been enjoying the book The Woo in the Wild Woods.<\/p>\n<p>These activities were inspired by the book\u00a0<em>The Woo in the Wild Woods\u00a0<\/em>by Ayrshire author Greta Yorke.\u00a0 Listen\u00a0 to and watch Greta reading her book\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/learningoutdoorssupportteam\/the-woo-in-the-wild-woods-an-introduction\/\">You Tube &#8211; The Woo in the Wild Woods<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/learningoutdoorssupportteam\/the-woo-in-the-wild-woods-an-introduction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Woo in the Wild Woods &#8211; An Introduction\u00a0<\/a>page will take you to Teacher Support Notes, an IDL topic Mind Map based on the book and links to activities to help you meet learners needs in all 8 areas of the curriculum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/public\/learningoutdoorssupportteam\/uploads\/sites\/11891\/2020\/05\/27074231\/Woo-thank-you-letter.pdf\">Woo in the Wild Woods &#8211; Thank You Letter Lesson<\/a><\/p>\n<p>CfE Es and Os\u00a0 Writing LIT 1 &#8211; 26a<\/p>\n<p>This has been added for learners perhaps working in P1 or P2.<\/p>\n<p>The activities below are suggested with learners working at Early Level but can be adapted for more confident readers and writers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Write a Spell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CfE Es and Os\u00a0 \u00a0LIT -1a, 0 -11a, 0 &#8211; 20a and LIT 1 &#8211; 20a<\/p>\n<p>Choose one of the creatures in the story you would like to help.\u00a0 Jamie cast spells but the book doesn\u2019t tell us what he said.\u00a0 Re read the story or watch Greta&#8217;s video to find out what kind of spells were used.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0A disappearing spell helped the rabbit but what would a disappearing spell sound like?\u00a0 Can you make up one of your own? You can writie it down or you can repeat it out loud.<\/p>\n<p>A spell can be very simple but fun spells often have rhymes which make them sound more powerful.\u00a0 Make up your own magic words (the more silly the better).\u00a0 Here is one to help you get thinking:<\/p>\n<p><em>Diggery- doo-nossy- mass disappear into the long green grass<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Make a Wand<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CfE Es and Os\u00a0 Listening and Talking LIT 0 &#8211; 04a and LIT 1- 04a<\/p>\n<p>Can you follow the instructions for making your own wand?<\/p>\n<p>Find a special stick and turn it into your very own wand.\u00a0 This video shows how you might decorate your wand and make it even more special!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Make a wand, a picture frame and do some stick weaving\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GCqHUwaVOgY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Write a Guide to a Wild Place<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CfE Es and Os\u00a0 LIT\u00a0 1 -26a<\/p>\n<p>Find a small wild area you know that wild creatures and bugs and beasties like to visit.\u00a0 It could be a scrap of waste ground at the end of your street or in your garden. \u00a0\u00a0It might be a corner of a wild wood. or a pot of flowers that the bees and butterflies visit and the slugs hide beneath.<\/p>\n<p>Make a single sheet guide to the wild space which shows what is there and how the wildlife use it.\u00a0 Use one big picture (photo or drawing) or a few smaller pictures and write labels to show what makes the wild place a good place for wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>This is a very simple example which tells you a little bit about a place we have called &#8216;The Wild Patch&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/public\/learningoutdoorssupportteam\/uploads\/sites\/11891\/2020\/06\/02080618\/LIT-The-Wild-Patch-A-Guide-1.pdf\">The Wild Patch &#8211; A Guide<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Working with colleagues, we have found that both Early and First Level readers have been enjoying the book The Woo in the Wild Woods.
