{"id":1911,"date":"2020-04-14T10:52:24","date_gmt":"2020-04-14T10:52:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/learningoutdoorssupportteam\/?page_id=1911"},"modified":"2021-01-07T14:30:54","modified_gmt":"2021-01-07T14:30:54","slug":"the-lorax-social-studies-activities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/learningoutdoorssupportteam\/the-lorax-social-studies-activities\/","title":{"rendered":"The Lorax Social Studies Activities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The Lorax<\/em>\u00a0is another great story from Dr Seuss.\u00a0 A simple picture book with a very important message.\u00a0 Watch a reading of the story\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/VlmgIPxfRbs\">You Tube \u2013 The Lorax<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t be fooled into thinking this book and the linked activities are suitable only for younger learners.\u00a0 The book and it\u2019s message is enjoyed from P1 to P7.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Play the Endangered Habitat Game <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Humming Fish cannot live in their pond when it is polluted.\u00a0 Play the game to gain understanding of threats to habitats.<\/p>\n<p>To play you will need to gather together 4 or 5 people at least so this would be a good chance to bring the whole family\/household together! It is best played outdoors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You need:<\/strong> a space large enough for all of your group to move around, 4 or 5 markers (sticks or stones for example), 4 or 5 players and a leader.<\/p>\n<p>Mark several spots (approximately 5) on the ground.\u00a0 Each spot represents a habitat.\u00a0\u00a0 Because the Humming fish live in ponds we will say that these habitats are ponds.<\/p>\n<p>Players\/Humming Fish move around until the leader signals to return to their habitat (only one player can use each habitat. With each new round the leader remove a habitat just as you would remove a chair in Musical Chairs.<\/p>\n<p>Each time a habitat is removed the leader gives a reason \u2013 \u2018A new road has been built and the pond filled in.\u2019 \u2018The pond is polluted.\u2019<strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>How long before you run out of habitats?<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Can you think of a way to adapt this game for indoors using toys or figures\u00a0 in place of the players?\u00a0 Could you use plates or pieces of paper to represent the habitats.\u00a0 The more toys and figures you have the more competition there is for habitats.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>(Rubbish) Treasure Hunt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Use this activity from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/public\/learningoutdoorssupportteam\/uploads\/sites\/11891\/2020\/04\/14084950\/PLAY-LEARN-AND-HAVE-FUN-1.pdf\">PLAY, LEARN AND HAVE FUN! <\/a> to highlight the consequences of our choices. Even if we choose to <em>not<\/em> litter, what happens to what we put in the bin?\u00a0 The activity instructions tell you how long it takes different items of rubbish to break down (decompose).<\/p>\n<p>Make a bar graph using the rubbish you have found (not using pencil and paper &#8211;
