What do trees do for us?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Outdoor and Woodland Learning Scotland (OWL Scotland ) have created a list of\u00a0 some of the jobs that trees do for us.\u00a0 For older children this is a chance to find information, take notes and present the information in a new form.<\/p>\n

Follow the link below to see the list of jobs.\u00a0 \u00a0Choose one thing from the list of reasons why we should plant trees.\u00a0\u00a0 Write down the job you have chosen and rewrite it in your own words \u2013 imagine that you had to explain the reason to someone younger than you.<\/p>\n

Choose a second reason \u2013 this time, choose one that you are not familiar with or don\u2019t quite understand.\u00a0 Search online for more information about the topic you have chosen.\u00a0 You may need to take notes as you collect this new information.\u00a0 Again, rewrite the reason in your own words.\u00a0 Imagine you are explaining it to someone older (but less well informed) than you.<\/p>\n

Get to Know a Tree and Write a Poem<\/strong><\/p>\n

This task is for writers working at First Level.<\/p>\n

It can be done by a small group\u00a0 of people working together or by an individual working alone.\u00a0 Your first task is to find a tree that you can spend some time with.\u00a0 This might be in your own garden or near to your house.\u00a0 It may be a tree that you pass on your daily walk or in a nearby park.<\/p>\n

The aim of this activity is to write a poem describing what a tree looks , feels, sounds<\/strong> and even smells like<\/strong>.\u00a0 The finished poem will be a description of how the tree appears to you from close up and from a distance.\u00a0 It will describe the top of the tree and the very bottom, down to the roots.\u00a0 \u00a0Use two describing words (adjectives) in each line and two naming words (nouns).\u00a0 For a more detailed explanation see Poem Template and Example.<\/a><\/p>\n

Once written out, your poem could be illustrated with bark rubbings taken from the tree\u00a0(OPAL Bark Art<\/a> shows you how) or with your own drawings.<\/p>\n

Make a List of the Jobs, Services and Products Provided by the Truffala Trees<\/strong><\/p>\n

This task is suitable for learners working at First and Second Level.<\/p>\n

List the jobs, services and products provided by the Truffala Trees \u2013don\u2019t just think about what the Lorax tells us.\u00a0\u00a0Use your new knowledge of trees and their benefits to humans and to biodiversity in general.<\/p>\n

You can use\u00a0 The Lorax – Truffala Trees List<\/a>\u00a0to record your ideas but any piece of paper will do.\u00a0 Save the trees and reuse a piece of scrap paper before it goes into the recycling bin!<\/p>\n

Good posters send a message in a simple and immediate way often using pictures with only a little bit of text.\u00a0 The pictures and text should work together to tell the most important information you want your audience to understand.<\/p>\n
