Spring Read 2017

This annual Spring Read Book Festival has been organised by school librarians since 2007. This years’ programme of events will be as exciting as ever with visits from three different authors – Barry Hutchison, Debi Gliori and Kirsty Logan.

These events are joint funded by the East Ayrshire Secondary Schools and Creative Scotland’s Live Literature programme, which is managed by the Scottish Book Trust. The scheme exists to bring Scottish-based fiction writers, playwrights, poets, storytellers and their work to every corner of Scottish society including schools, libraries, writers groups, additional support needs organisations, community groups and literary organisations.

By holding these events, we aim to introduce our pupils to new authors, encourage them to read more widely and inspire them to write. The visits promote literacy and also provide the opportunity for tie-in work in the classroom. All East Ayrshire Secondary Schools are invited to take part!

World Book Day

Our S1 and S2 pupils have been taking part in the first round of the Readers’ Cup Quiz this week to celebrate World Book Day.  For those who make it through – the interclass round will be held in April.

Members of our S1 book club visited Glasgow to see the ceremony for the Scottish Children’s Book Awards this week. Pupils also had the chance to buy books and get them signed by the authors.

The winners of the design-a-bookmark competition have been chosen – thanks to everyone who entered!

Harry Potter Book Night

Harry Potter Book Night is on Thursday 4th February. It’s a chance for fans of Harry Potter to celebrate the books and share them with other people who might not have read them yet.

This year, Bloomsbury publishers are running a competition for pupils to win a Harry Potter event for their school. There are also 25 sets of Harry Potter books to be given away. All you have to do is create your own magic spell. Collect an entry form from the library.

Book Week Scotland

Happy Book Week!

Our Guess the Character competition is running all week. Pupils can collect an entry form from the library. Hand completed forms back in by the end of the day on Friday.

Have a look at classroom doors round the school to find out what books your teachers are  currently reading.

English classes will be invited to our half-price Scholastic book fair over the next few days. Pupils can also visit at break and lunch.

Readers’ Cup Success!

The team from K.A. won the Readers’ Cup Quiz today at Stewarton Academy. The competition has been running since 2005 and this is the first time Kilmarnock Academy has won the trophy! With a fantastic score of 47/50 we beat teams from Auchinleck, Grange, Stewarton and St. Joseph’s. Congratulations to our team members and a huge thank you to our reserves and supporters who came along with us on the day 🙂 Also, a special mention to the S2 book club who made us a team banner for our table.

Staff and pupils at K.A. can visit the library’s Glow pages for more information and for photos.
