{"id":2336,"date":"2017-10-16T08:14:51","date_gmt":"2017-10-16T08:14:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/kilmarnockacademy\/?p=2336"},"modified":"2017-10-16T08:14:51","modified_gmt":"2017-10-16T08:14:51","slug":"skill-of-the-month-communication","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/kilmarnockacademy\/2017\/10\/16\/skill-of-the-month-communication\/","title":{"rendered":"SKILL OF THE MONTH:  COMMUNICATION"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">\u2018Skills for Life and Work\u2019 has always been high on the agenda here at Kilmarnock Academy but a recent survey of employers has made us have another look at how our classrooms deal with these. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">A \u2018STEMNET\u2019 survey identified a number of &#8216;soft&#8217; skills employers find desirable in young people with some of these &#8216;soft&#8217; skills even seen as more desirable than the traditional academic skills that schools focus on! From this list, the Academy has identified six that we think our pupils would benefit most from having highlighted in lessons and have created a \u2018Skill of the Month\u2019 focus. These are:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">&#8211; communication (October)<br \/>\n&#8211; problem solving (November)<br \/>\n&#8211; being self-motivated (December)<br \/>\n&#8211; working under pressure\/to deadlines (January &#8211; for prelim time!)<br \/>\n&#8211; organisational skills (February \u2013 for revising for upcoming exams!)<br \/>\n&#8211; team working (March)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">So, in October, teachers will take a few moments in lessons to highlight to pupils when they are using their <strong><u><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">communication skills <\/span><\/u><\/strong>as well as all the other skills, talents and knowledge pupils are undertaking<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0This might be when giving pupils feedback on a presentation they have been asked to prepare or making &#8220;clear communication&#8221; a success criteria at the start of piece of work!
